I was completely shocked that that was actually the problem too and thankful that I do not have to go back into a store for additional assistance. I never had any issues with my iPhone 4.

An update on my situation. I was having the same frozen screen issues that other folks have mentioned here. I got a replacement iPhone 5 from my carrier after a 4 day wait which I thought was not too bad. Well, we set the phone up in the store and it worked fine. Then, I was using it at home yesterday evening and it started freezing up again just like my original one! I did the usual routine of resets including factory restore via my MacBook Pro. Same problems...if anything, this one freezes up more than my first one. I was back in the store again earlier on and they have ordered me another phone! They reckon it will take a week. I can`t believe I got another faulty iPhone 5. Is there any possibility it could be the SIM card they gave me? I mean...the only consistent factor between the two phones is the SIM card. I thought this was a long shot but just something I thought of.

Alright. Here's my follow up. The cause of the problem came to me in the evening, while sitting in the warmth of my living room with my, then, perfectly working iPhone 5.
The screen only becomes unresponsive when I am out and about. When the phone is cold!
'Tested the proposition by putting the phone into the fridge for 2 minutes, and behold: the screen stopped responding to all touches and swipes! Got the phone nice and warm again, and, voilà, it worked again.
I told all this to the Genius at the G-Bar the next day. He still made me go through the whole DFU, wipe, reset rigmarole, after which the phone was fine (of course). I could not persuade him to come outside with me to see it start to fail again (argh!). But it did. 'Had to get another G-Bar appointment, and this time they gave me new phone.
I'm happy again.

DFU is Device Firmware Upgrade. From what they told me, it's a more involved process than just the restore that wipes all your info. It also wipes the iOS and the device firmware and reloads it. She said since my issue was intermittent (happening at random, rather than every single time I touched the screen) that she thought it was software related and now necessarily a hardware problem. She said sometimes wiping the iOS and the firmware and reloading it helps. She did not completely rule out a hardware issue though and said if the problem persists or continues, to come back in. I have not had the problem since, but will check out the factory charger today. I usually use my iPad charger at home and the USB if I need to charge while at work, but the other day I used the factory charger at work when the phone was giving me fits. I don't remember if the phone was actually plugged in at the time though. I know the first time I noticed an issue (last Saturday), I was not using the factory charger. It was either plugged to my iPad charger or not plugged in at all. I will be keeping a close eye on it until I'm satisfied it's resolved.

My original and replacment iPhone 5 were both having this issue only while attached to the charger and at or near 100% charge.
Last night I plugged it into a different outlet, used my spare Lightening to USB cable and the factory USB adaptor wall plug, so a completely different setup, and surprisingly I had no issues at all. I will try moving the cable and wall plug to my original outlet to rule my home out as the problem. If there is no issue I will cancel my appoitment at the retail store tomorrow, and then go on to test the original Lightening to USB in the factory wall plug. It will be a relief if that is the solution, although somewhat of a disapoitment that the aftermarket accessory won't work.
I may still contact Apple about the problem, because it is my understanding that the iPhone 5 is intended to work with the same spec USB wall plug as the 4, so there may still be a grounding defect with the 5.
My issues have not been related to the heat or cold.
SGT7212 - Thank you for the DFU explination. Is that something they must do in the store?

I have the same issue, white iPhone 5, the screen freezes and is unusable while charging, BUT if I touch the aluminium border around the phone, then it works. I wonder if the same happens with the black iPhone 5? I'm taking this back to the Apple store next week.

StutlerT - No problem at all. I've done some searches online and found that there are instructions online on how to enter DFU mode if your phone gets bricked during an iOS update. Apparently it is also used when jailbreaking. I don't know where or how you would get the proper firmware to reinstall onto your phone though. I haven't researched it enough because I don't plan on messing with it on my own. I'll let the Apple peeps do it so if anything goes wrong, it's on them.
On a side note, I primarily use my iPad charger while at home. In my office, I have a USB charger that I've always used for my iPhone 4 with no issues. I noticed today that when I use this USB charger, I have the screen issue. I have not noticed it when using my iPad charger, but will be checking this tonight. I am also going to check the charger that came with my iPhone, as it has the same specs as the aftermarket USB charger in my office as far as wattage, volts and amps output. So far, I do not get the issue when using the USB cable plugged to a PC.

Someone suggested that I turn off LTE. I did this two days ago and my frozen touchscreen problems are gone. I just turned on LTE again and within 5 minutes the screen was frozen again. Has anyone else out there tried this? I am wondering if this is a hardware or software issue. Switching off LTE is by no means a permanent solution though since LTE is one of the main reasons I upgraded to the iPhone 5. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has noticed a connection between LTE and touchscreen issues.

Having issue where the screen simply is not as responsive as it should be. Have to repeatedly repress or reswipe. I've bought the 4, 4S, and now 5 at launch. With the 4, I had "no SIM" within a few days, with the 4S I had the yellowed screen and lived with it, and now this. Ugh!

I had my phone for no more then 20 minutes, had it plugged into my computer and it froze. Couldn't slide to unlock or enter my passcode. Reset it a few times but nothing fixed it. Took it back to my Carrier and they said they will have to send it back and get me a replacement. So frustrating

Same issue... Noticed when I went out on my motorcycle last night. It was about 58'F out last night and then the phone stopped working out of nowhere! Slider wouldnt work and all my notifications started jumping around the screen! Phone sat for a bit when I got home and it started working again. So for the **** of it I threw the phone in the freezer for 45 seconds and it started acting up again! I believe it has to do with the fact that there are no more digitizers above the lcd, the lcd is now the touchscreen. I will be heading directly to Apple today so they can give me a new phone.

Same issues everyone else is having. Touch screen becomes unresponsive and you have to do a hard boot to get it back up and running. Often to having it lock up again almost immediately.
Waiting a few before returning as I hope that it is a software issue that can be updated. Can't be without my phone for work.
Please advise if anyone has heard anything specific from Apple staff regarding actuall cause of problem.

Update: after my second iPhone 5 immediately had the same problem, again only when charging, I called Apple back. I had been using a third party USB wall plug and they recommended using the factory wall plug. No issues what-so- ever after the switch. They even told me to stop into my local store and they'd swap my third party adapter out with another Apple adapter at no charge. I'm very satisfied.
Carter426 - when I went in to swap it it took less than 20 minutes to back up my first phone and restore onto the second so if yours can't be fixed by swapping chargers then you don't need to be without for long.
