Just tried this.  It didn't work.  Apple tells me that I have to exchange my phone for a new one.  What a pain...

I have also tried every fix previously mentioned here with no luck. I currently have the 4GB dataplan (which is no longer available for new customers). Calling AT&T support wasn't helpful at all.

The 5GB Dataplan will probably work (that does cost an extra $5/month for home users). As long as more people complain we'll eventually get this resolved. I will be going to the AT&T store tomorrow and then get an appointment with at the Apple store, will post results.

Just want to add my voice to the discussion here...  New iPhone 5.  I have the 4GB ATT plan with tethering.  Was working on my 4s.  With the 5, I get the "To enable personal hotspot, contact AT&T" message when I press the Set Up Personal Hotspot button.  I've worked with AT&T twice now.  The first time they switched me to the 5GB plan--no change.  They switched me back to my 4GB plan and I tried restoring the fimmware, resetting network settings, soft reset, disabling LTE, and enabling wi-fi all to no avail.  The phone just doesn't think I'm authorized for tethering.  I'll be back on the phone with ATT tomorrow...

I am with Optus, a provider in Australia and am having this same issue with my 4s since upgrading to iOS 6.

This was never an issue previously.

Hotspot is showing up on my device and my MacBook Pro is detecting a wifi from my phone.

Then hotspot completely disappears from my phone and my computor won't connect.

    Please fix this bug ASAP.

Spent over 2 hours on the phone with AT&T to try to resolve this issue. The. Spent another hour and a half on the phone with apple. All for nothing... No one can resolve the issue. The problem started when I upgraded my 4S to  iOS6 and spent two days trying to resolve the issue... AT&T said it was a 4S problem and that the iPhone 5 did t have the issue. It was time to upgrade my phones so we spent almost $800 to upgrade. Wouldn't you know the problem is on my new phones too. It's almost worth bailing from AT&T to go to Verizon at this point. If I didn't have so much invested in apple I would dump the phones too. Really disappointed in AT&T, Apple and the release of an iOS that isn't ready.

I'm having the same exact problem as reported by thefu on the first page of this thread, except I have Verizon. Originally the hotspot option was on the first page of the settings. I turned it on and both the VPN and hotspot menu options went away. If I go to settings->general->cellular there is an option to turn on personal hotspot. When I try that I get a pop up saying to call 611 or go to verizonwireless.com to enable this on my account.

I have called Verizon twice. Both times they said my account and shared data plan settings looks fine, and this feature should work for me.

I should also point out that this is happening on both my wife's and my own new iPhone 5 with iOS 6. It certainly feels like an iOS bug to me: http://bugreport.apple.com

    Hello...

Im liveing in norway and have no problems with this at all. I have Telenor as my provider... bla bla bla...

First of all. There are no problems with the phone.. Whell maby? It depends how you put it. bla bla bla...

Here howe you can fix thes. You need to have 3G where you are, Mobildata is no god. Open your phone, Settings>General>Cellular (Turn on "Cellular Data" and "Enable 3G") >Cellular Data Network> If there is nothing in here. Call your cellular provider ore visit there home page for the info. - "Cellular Data - APN" and "internet Tethering - APN" shold be the same.

    Good luck.

Not a carrier isssue - I can use my Hotspot if I connect to my iPhone via bluetooth or direcect with the usb cable , if I try connecting my laptop or iPad via wifi - it will only connect to the internet at times, but will alway give local access only.

I may have corrected my issue with my iPhone 4 IOS 6.0 hotspot internet access via wifi.  Access with usb or bluetooth was good with 3G hotspot active, however wifi access linked to my phone but would block internet access.  I did the following:  I do not have an active icloud account - I accessed Settings - iCloud -set Storage & Backup to OFF - Wi-Fi access for PC and iPad  is now working with my iPhone 4 3G hotspot.

That's not the issue here.  The problem is enabling the personal hotspot at all.

Hi.   I work for a small company and we had some of our ATT users upgrade their OS and many had their hotspot ability removed.   When you try to activate, it refers us to ATT but they state that its active.   Our sales rep says that there is no problems but apparently there is.... HELP !!

Here is my story regarding iphone 4S, mobil hotspot, and upgrading to OS6:

phone was working just fine regarding mobil hotspot, did the OS6 hotspot upgrade, went to my office where I need

the use of the hotspot, and found it to be missing completely. Went to the AT & T store, and they struggled to try and help. Even got on the phone with apple support.  Nothing accomplished.  Next day, made an appointment with Genius desk........he tried everything he could including a complete restore.  This did not nothing.............the problem was to be escalated to iphone software people. Next day, called apple support and was turned over to a manager.  He gave me a case number and had to go back to the apple store.  They were to swap out sim cards and do some other things (not sure what), to determine if this was software, hardware, or AT and T issue.  I don't know if they actually did any of that.  What I do know is they got a new 4S phone, told me they could not identify if the phone selected for me had the OS6 update or not, but would give me a new phone and we would see if the hotspot would work.

A new 4s iphone, NO O6 update on the phone (thank goodness), and voila, hotspot came back just as if had been on the phone PRIOR to the OS6 update.  That is my story.............there is no issue with AT and T or probably any carrier, it is an OS6 bug issue! You can try to reset, restore all you want, it will fail if you did the upgrade to OS6. Since my voice mail needed to be set up again due to the new phone, I asked the staff at AT &T what percent of people actually use a mobil hotspot, and they thought only about 5% of those using AT and T services.  I hope that even though only a few of us are affected as iphone users, they manage to remedy this situation............makes me hesitate to ever update anything again!!! Good luck all.

So here's my solve path for the personal hotspot missing issue after upgrading to iOS6 from iOS 5.1.1.  This is on a iPhone 4S.  I have the 4GB data plan plus tethering (personal hotspot).

    Summary of fix

    - The issue wasnt the phone.  It was fixed by Level 2 AT&T by messing with network/account settings.  My plan didnt change to 5GB - the 4GB plan I was on is the same now its working.  I didnt get a new SIM card, or a new phone.  So my suggestion if you face this problem is call AT&T, and escalate the problem up through their support.

    Steps Tried

    - Turn phone off and on

    - Reset network settings

    - Restore phone using itunes back to factory defaults.  Setup as a new phone.

    - Restore phone and recover backup

    - Do a reset on the phone (hold down top button and front button).

    - Called AT&T and was transferred to Apple.  Apple escalated up to a Level 2 support person.  Transferred back to AT&T Level 2 support (who fixed the problem).

    - Note - apple support and AT&T support apparently cannot be on the same call at the same time (some bogus rule).  So they will transfer you back and forth but cant be on at the same time.

    - Initially AT&T Level 1 said it was Apple problem (a punt - they couldnt work out how to fix).  Apple Level 1 said it was AT&T's problem, so its important to get to Level 2 so they actually try to fix.

So like I said at the top, the key is getting AT&T to fix your account, not the phone issue.  They will ask you to turn the phone off, then back on a few times, then reset network settings again.  It was the network settings reset that finally fixed it for me, after they monkeyed with account settings a few times.

    Good luck!
