After trying one more time with the OTA install it finallly went through even though I got the Recovery Mode message initially. I restarted the iPad and everything came up fine with iO6 installed. Pain In The A**...

I tried to upgrade ios6 from the iphone but the screen showed itunes logo and usb indicaating it to connect t itunes. I did that and itunes said it is in recovery mode and the phone needs to restore. My questing is, will it back up my data (photos, contacts, apps) before it restores? Please note I never backed up either on icloud or itunes.

If you haven't ever backed up your phone, to iTunes or to iCloud, then I don't think anything will be backed up if you have already gotten the iTunes logo/USB screen. You usually need to have backed it up as some point in order to get things back.
I would strongly recommend heading to an Apple store just to make sure you get the right assistance before trying anything.

Here is the solution!
This happened to me too. I tried updating to iOS 6 through my iPhone4. The update was almost finished when suddenly my screen went black. Then when I turned it on it showed a USB going into iTunes. I plugged it in and it said my iPhone was in recovery mode.
What I did was download iOS 6 on iTunes on my computer( may need to update iTunes). Then I pressed "restore and update iPhone" on iTunes and it worked.
(iOS 6 may take a while to download, it took me 8 hours but I do have slow Internet)

Now my phone won't restrore from itunes. I updated latest software for Mac, updated itunes to 10.7 and then tried the only option available to restore and update software .Download goes fine until almost to the end and then shows "The software for the iphone was corrupted during download". I tried several times with no luck. The phone remains in recovery mode with the itunes/usb icons on the screen. Help!!

Download the previous iPhone firmware.
Open up iTunes. It gave me the Recovery Mode pop-up. I clicked ok. I held down Shift and then clicked Restore. I browsed to the firmware file I downloaded and selected it and the restore process went smoothly.

I updadted my Ipod fourth generation to ios6 just fine, no hiccups or anything. I just bought my 4s last night and i'm not too worried about the data on it because i had no pictures or apps or anything, but i am disappointed with apple for messing up so soon. I am restoring it on itunes right now in hopes that it will work

I was reading your posting and we had same upgrade issue. I think our mac wasn't plugged in during upgrade and it failed. We do too have 18 months old daughter and my wife had lots of photos and videos on the iphone. We are very upset, because we thought we lost everything past year or so worth of memories. So I was destined to try my best to access iphone somehow and get the data back and here are my discoveries.
1. iphone data was not accessible if it failed during the update. I wasn't able to get access the data using any software out there.
2. before upgrading the IOS via itune, it should have made a backup. This backup should be available to restore from once you have your iphone operating.
3. in case you want to directly access the data, it's under /users/USER_NAME/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
4. you can access the backup list from itune as follows:
Preferences > Devices
I hope you get your data back.

You may have been able to retrieve data from your iPhone before restoring to factory settings by using the following application which needs to be installed on your mac: 'Wondershare Data Recovery for iTunes'. I have been able to recover tons of photos from my iphone but I am still struggling with the factory reset. Hope this helps whomever is struggling to get their photos/videos back.

If you phone is a 4 and not a 4S you can try this program to recover your photos.
