On the Verizon Wireless website, log in to My Verizon and you'll see your device listed.  The middle section is My Usage, and at the bottom of that is usage details.  Click on that and the next page will show voice, text and data.  Scroll down to data and click view data details and it will show the amount of data used at specific times.

This specific detail is only available on the website.  Not the mobile app.

Chris, are you seeing numbers on the VZ website consistent with what is being reported on your phone?

Tim, would disabling LTE in Settings > Cellular do anything?

    Amy,

I have three entirely different numbers:

The Verizon summary (which they base the "overages" on is giving me a number of 4.1 GB used since Friday when I got the phone.

The Verizon detail (which you can download to a spreadsheet and summarize) shows a total of 1.5 GB used since Friday when I got the phone.

The cellular usage read off the phone itself (under Settings/General/Usage/Cellular Usage) shows a total of 6.9 GB used since Friday when I got the phone.

So I have no idea what the real number is at all!!  My gut feeling is none of them, because one of the specific data chunks shown in the Verizon detail is from 11:11am on 9/25 (I was in a meeting in downtown Chicago with the phone in my pocket and no apps open, and everything had been synced on WiFi the night before) of 629 MB.  I have no idea what could cause that to happen.  I had two other strange large chunks that same day for 111 MB and 262 MB which I cant explain.

The good new is that the 262 MB chunck (7:30pm on the 25th) was the last rogue data that hit my phone.  But it doesn't explain why my detail adds up to 1.5 GB but I've run into the overage according to Verizon (they've charged me another $10 for going past 4 GB, however my reporting and escalation with them resulted in a 3 GB credit they've given me while this sorts itself out).

    Tim.

    Also -

Disabling LTE shouldn't do anything to help/hinder data usage; it's a much faster network (and it does work great!) than 3G, but a 4 MB file is a 4 MB file and is 4 MB worth of data; it's just that you'll get it much faster via LTE than 3G, but it should not affect the amount of data used on your account at all.

    Tim.

Well here's something I find odd. When I disable LTE I get two data tallies on the phone. Cellular data and tether data. The second I re-enable LTE, the tether data total is rolled up into the cellular data. I have not set up hotspot and have no devices tethering to me. And my numbers keep exploding. Husband has same phone but his numbers just creep compared to mine.

I'm involved in a similiar discusssion on the Verizon Customer forum, and one of the poster there just said that Verizon is now acknowledging that there is a counter problem.  The most accurate number to use is in the usage detail on the MyVerizon site that I described earlier...which fortunately for me is the smallest number!

Got my iPhone 5 last night at 6 PM EST - new Verizon customer, just switched from AT&T..

At 2 PM this afternoon I received a text message saying I had used 53% of my 1 GB limit.   Verizon reps said that at 5:50 AM my phone went through 400 MB of data while I was asleep.

After talking with both Apple & Verizon I reset the cellular usage data counter - within an hour it appears my phone received 100 MB while sitting in my living room with Wi-Fi on the phone. Wait just checked again ... within 10 minutes it's up to 217MB,

I urge you all to get the DataMan app (free), which supplies data usage info on your phone.  I have DataMan Pro for just a few dollars, which gives greater detail.  You can also set it to sound alarms at desired threshholds.

Except that DataMan Pro was removed from the apple store... At least that was the case on 9/22. Is it back?

Exactly what happened to me... Just turn off your cellular data until the problem is resolved, I guess.

Lazykins - I knew they had to remove the usage per app feature, but did not realize they had removed the whole app.  When pro was first available it did not track per app, that was added in an update later, hence my misunderstanding.  You are right, the pro version is no longer available.  I'm so paranoid about losing mine, that I've copied the ipa to another folder.
