Yes it will hurt it..a lot, like a lot. You're supposed to buy it then just leave it on the shelf and never touch it.

You should limit iPad use to no more than 30 minutes a day and no more than 2 hours in any one week.
Also, do NOT remove the plastic covering as it will be more prone to scratches and dust.
I recommend you put it back in the box after every use. Store it in the box no higher than 4 feet (less UV from the sun) and no lower than 1 foot (dust and dirt).
Use a slightly dampened microfiber cloth and gently clean the cable and the iPad at least weekly. Do NOT spray anything directly onto the iPad. Always spray onto a cloth then use the cloth to clean.
