This is not correct. The @icloud.com variant is an addition to existing addresses and aliases, and all existing @mac.com and @me.com addresses will be maintained. (There are some instances of existing aliases disappearing and Apple is apparently aware and dealing with this.) No new @me.com addresses or aliases can be created.

Excuse me sir. I speak from experience! Mine are gone. me.com aliases that I have used since the begining of MobileMe are gone! Now iCloud.com. Where does your assertion that "Apple is apparently aware and dealing with this" originate? I find nothing other than your unsubstantiated reply.

BTW. One used to be able to name the mail account on there iDevice. Now stuck with iCloud. THE MOST RIDICULOUS NAME FOR MOBILE SERVICES ON THE PLANET! I've been a Apple/Mac fan since Commodore.
This is the type of knucklehead business choices that drive loyal customers to rant online!!
