Sep 30, 2012 7:18 AM in response to JudithBCby MrHoffman,You can ask at the local Apple store for the official sequence; here is the Apple overview of the Mountain Lion upgrade sequence.
In short: purchase the Snow Leopard DVD directly from Apple (AFAIK, the DVD is reportedly still available), upgrade to Snow Leopard and then patch to 10.6.8, then purchase and download the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
First, ensure that your system is supported by Snow Leopard. See the Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications (SP575) web page. For the next jump, see if your Mac is supported by Mountain Lion.
In the US, the contact number for ordering the DVD is 1-800-MY-APPLE.
The other obvious alternative to the software upgrade - and which will bring you a newer version of OS X - can be a used or new Mac box.
