Thank you Joseph, solved it for me with my iPhone 2g. Turned out to be a Belle & Sebastian song.

Great it "sort of worked" for me as well! Thank you. It is only funny, that the latest events are all only displayed like 30.09.2012 although they are named correctly in iPhoto. And they all have no pictures in them at all. I just wonder, why Apple is not responding yet, because it seems that so many users having this issue.

OK, last night I reported that the new Aperture fixed my problem but now I am not so sure. Before I got iTunes to see my iPhoto library in its entirety, I had been checking and unchecking "sync photos" ans suddenly I say the next check box become available which had been grayed out all along. (sync partial library)
I thought therefore that the aperature library must have been what fixed it but only one of my 4 devices finished syncing. Today I see the same issue again but after going back and forth threw the options, once again randomly it seems to be working. Mind you I have never searched for the & symbol and I have dozens of slideshows with music that might use the & sign. Yest I got iPhoto syncing to work for the second time, so I am syncing my 2nd device. I think the bug is still here for me though.

Thanks for the update! I don't have aperature on my machine and still have the issue. Hopefully apple will figure this out soon. Stinks this is a problem. Thanks for the update fella's. Hope to have a fix soon!
Others finding this please report this to apple.

From bwolfy..."Others finding this please report this to apple."
Done. I've reported the bug to the Apple Feedback site and the Apple Developers site.
Like bwolfy, I encourage all to send Apple feedback about this problem...to as many appropriate places as possible.
I even wrote about this in the review section for the iPhoto application in the Mac App Store.
Although I was able to find the guilty song and seem to be running on all 8 cylinders again, I would encourage anyone who has not updated to iPhoto 9.4.4 to not do so. I have two other Macs and I guarantee they are NOT getting this update until Apple fixes the problem.

This worked for me. The ampersand appeared in the name of a folder on my computer and there were five references to it -- the folder name was listed after five different iPhoto album names. THANK YOU, Joseph Delaney!

iPhoto 9.4.1 is on the way and will hopefully solve all our problems:
- Improves the reliability of syncing to iOS devices via iTunes.
- Fixes an issue that could cause iPhoto to quit unexpectedly when using the Export command.
- Addresses an issue that could cause iPhoto to quit unexpectedly when upgrading calendars, multiple books, and cards.
- Resolves an issue with viewing and downloading photos synced via Facebook albums.

iOS6 and iphoto, iPad, Apple TV sync problem still unresolved. Turning on and off a few times per community advice have not helped. What should I do now? wait for an upgrade fix?
"&" is not the obvious bug/answer. Not sure what went wrong as I cannot select albums and events for sync. Situation is worse for iPad and Apple TV when error 1140 message popped up even before backup get completed.

This is great news! How do you know this? Just curious is all. Do you know when it will be out?

What WMR mentioned of 9.4.1does not point specifically to the sync problem enfaced. Strangely, i brought my iphone to apple store today and the greyed options seem to normalise but coming back home nothing happened. probably just because that demo macs do not have a full library to simulate.

Did not fix all the issues.
I guess we need to be submitting more feedback here :-

Ian, did the update at least let you syncy your Apple devices at will, and report the proper storage space used up, and let you choose to install partial sections of your library if you so desire? If this main issue is fixed I will be happy tonight.
