Q: Messages won't work with iMessage after Mountain Lion install

I previously had Messages Beta installed on both my Macbook and iMac and they worked great.  Now I upgraded to Mountain Lion and Messages works fine on my iMac, but not on my Macbook.  It defaults to Bonjour and when I enter the Apple ID info I get a message "Your Apple ID "xxxxxxxx@xxxxx.com" can't be used to set up iMessage at this time.", and it says to contact customer support.  What is causing this and does anyone know how to fix it?

Thank you so much! I called Apple and sent emails back and forth, and they had NO idea how to help me. They kept telling me I had two Apple IDs, except I never have. Adding my Apple ID email to Messages on my phone fixed everything!

Someone should tell support that that's all you need to do.

Just FYI, this problem is easily resolved by a tech familiar with the iCloud support app. I had to call 4 times. Spent 3 hours on the line with 2 different senior techs who had me going through gymnastics. I even wiped my hard drive and did a clean install with 10.8.2, didn't fix it. Then I called back, spoke with a 1st level tech who knew about this support app, and he fixed the problem in 10 seconds, literally.

Hope this helps someone out there.

I had the same issue. I tried a lot of the stuff from above.

What ended up working for me was:

    1) Changing my password

    2) Removing all of the Alternative contact options (email addresses and phone numbers) through the Manage Your Apple ID web interface (https://appleid.apple.com/).

Seems like there might be a number of things that can cause this problem. Hopefully my solution works for some of you.

    My issue was the following:

I could login to Messages on other systems (iMac, MacPro, iPad and iPhone) but not my MacBook Pro. This happend for me after installing the Mavericks Golden Master (The iMac also had Mavericks installed but didn't have the login problem). I could login to FaceTime on the MacBook Pro but I got the message "Your Apple ID ("email@domain.com") can't be used to set up iMessage at this time" when trying to sign into Messages.
