Q: iPhone Ringer Switch not working in iOS6

Updated my iPhone 4S yesterday to iOS6 and noticed this morning that my ringer switch (left side, top switch between on and off (orange bar shown for off)) doesn't function. NOTHING. no icon on the screen, no vibration, and no, it does not silent the phone (i discovered this when my phone rang loudly in the office... oops)

It used to be that flipping the switch would show a speaker icon on the screen, and when switched off, the speaker icon would have a line through it indicating that the phone was on silent mode.  The phone would also vibrate when switched into silent mode.

seems like iOS6 has broken this?

i've tried:

1. restarting the phone

2. resetting the phone

3. turning "do not disturb" on and off

4. changing sounds and vibration settings in settings > sounds

anybody else have this issue?

anybody else have a fix?

hoping i wont have to restore to my ios5 last backup...

I have the same issue exept my phone doesn't ring for incoming calls. I've tried every fix, restored the phone and spent over an hour on the phone with Apple Care doing a second restore. The supervisor told me that he hadn't heard of the issue at all and came to the conclusion that I'd somehow broken the silent switch and that I'd have to pay $150 to have it repaired, despite my insistance that it was obviously a software issue since the problem started immediately after I updated to iOS 6. Total BS. I want this issue resolved immediately considering that the phone is virtually useless to me if I have to carry it around and continually check for notifications and incoming texts, phone calls, etc.

    Hi sixtwenty,

Have you tried turning on the "Do Not Disturb" option? Here's some info on it:

    Hi boom,

Are you sure you don't have the "Do Not Disturb" option turned on? Is there a little crescent moon showing at the top next to your time? If so, go to:

Settings>Do Not Disturb, and turn it off....

Not sure if this is the issue, but thought I'd throw it out there....

    Cheers,

Update: i took my 4s to an apple store and within about 15 seconds the genius tech told me he'd replace the phone. he said that apple used to repair the ringer switch but now they just replace the phone, its easier. since my phone was under 1 year old since the time of purchase, it qualified. it also qualified because i had apple care. 15 minutes later i walked out with a new iphone 4s with working silent switch. i immediately updated it to ios6 and restored my icloud backup from the previous phone with silent switch issues and have had no further issues, so it was obviously a hardware issue and unrelated to ios6.

What type of device do you have and what iOS is it running? This thread is from over 2 years ago, so it's a bit old, so not sure if your problem is the same without some more details. What, exactly, is your issue?

It won't update to iOS 8 because it is an iPhone 4. iOS 7.1.2 is as high as you can go.

With a device that old, the issue could be anything. You probably need to take a trip to the Apple Store to see if they have any advice. How long have you had this device? How long have you had this issue?

The only way to find out is to take it to them to see. If you dropped it that could be the cause of the switch issue. There isn't much more we can do here.

    Best of luck,
