Q: Mail won't open after update

Here's what I did:

Reloaded original mail program from disk.(Of course that wouldn't work). Then, reinstalled both updates and magically all back to normal. Seems simpler than some of the fixes I've seem here. I had a hard time following the geek speak.(sorry guys).

Worked great.  I've been living off my iTouch mail for days.  Thank you. 

BTW -

To Wzzz, I failed to thank you for pointing me in the right direction in the first place - e.g. - what version of Mail was in the application folder.

Wouldn't have had a clue without that help. You saved most of my saturday!

Because this issue, which I've been following since day one and helping people with, isn't all about you and what you've done -- and because you bombed it into so many threads with a huge font as if you are the Second Coming.

What might have been helpful (or loving, if you insist) as I already said, would have been to just get down to it and post the fix that ended up working for you, just like everyone else.

And, please, if you must reply, one will be enough.

The version of Mail that's in the Application folder when the 004 update is run is the whole key to the whole thing, Trey.... version 4.5 and only one v4.5 should be in only one place in the entire HDD's folder structure -- only in the Applications folder, when installing that update. Kinda curious though, since I've done, say, iTunes updates using SW Update, with iTunes NOT in the Apps folder, & what happens is a whole new iTunes gets stuck in the Apps folder. One thing I've learned about Mail.... it's kinda touchy. Gotta have backup.

So I, like others, had relocated their Mail.app v4.5 to a folder other than the Application folder, and then we all ran the 004 update, which made things go 'break' on all our machines.

Seems the 004 Security Update had some security updates for Snow's Mail v4.5, which would bump it up to 4.6, but when the installer couldn't find it in the App folder, then it'd put a basically useless half-baked v4.6 Mail.app in there that is sans, apparently, some needed guts that're in the v4.5, and so which did nothing at all when dbl-clicked.

So what I learned, again, is to keep Apple things in the Applications folder, and have only 1 copy of just 1 version of those particular apps in that Apps folder & no where else on the entire HDD.

LOL wow.... I just got a little carried away is all, Rocky...... ok, somewhere between too much & a lot carried away. But the visuals don't interfere with the factual statements contained within. Some folks get tweaked over unnecessary blingbling which, I'll admit, it kind of is. Ain't nuthin tho. Just havin' fun man. jeez  Sorry to have rained on your ongoing project.

Yep. That was Plan A. But I went with Plan B. Next time I'll switch 'em.

hehehe... THX, alii. And thanks go to WZZZ too of course, and several others. All I did was just basically tell what I did to fix the problem. Verbosely though. Too much so, according to some. LOL  Eau well......

Don't know about you, alii, but when my hosed Mail.app *FINALLY* got to working again (I *really* didn't want to have to reinstall the whole frikkin OS just to get Mail working, which is what I was thinkin' I just might be doing after all I'd already done did absolutely nuthin at all to fix the prob, not even reinstalling the 10.6.8 Combo Update (which really surprised me, since those fixes worked on some other systemic-level probs before), & then after that on to my "post-oh.sh*t" frantic 'net researching, I finally got it working. Finally, I could close down Thunderbird (nice app, but don't want it).  And I distinctly heard Kool & The Gang's "CELEBRATION" at "volume 11" in my mind's ear.

Man, ya just don't screw with the email, man. Lotsa biz & personal stuff done thru that medium these days.

thank you very much for the clear instructions, it was very helpful!  I followed all the instructions, saw your second post and dragged MailTimeMachineHelper into Resources.

And now, it works. A very good and helpfull Support for this differently problem. The version is mail 4.6

I'm also having this problem and can't work it out from the replies here.

I just allowed the auto update for 10.6.8 yestreday on my iMac after waiting a week. Now Mail won't work, it just sends a report. I've only got the one app icon in the App;ication folder so can't see any doubles.

Can anyone help please?

Try this:

First download and install the 10.6.8 Combo update, then apply the Security Update again.

We had a flood of customers rush in after this update and discovered the same thing. In all cases we went to Apple/Support/Downloads and re-downloaded the SecUpd2012-004.dmg and reinstalled it manually from the Finder and it repaired the Mail program and icon and restored the Mail program to full functionality.
