Could this be a problem with just this podcast? If so, can anyone else replicate? If not, any ideas on how to get this podcast to play?
First of all, thanks for all the information you provided in your post. It really makes troubleshooting these issues a lot easier!
It could be a problem with the actual podcast file, but it could also be a problem with its compatibilty on the iPod Shuffle.
What format is this podcast in particularly? Could you try changing it to another format (such as MP3) to see if that helps?

Perhaps this article can help.

Ok, yes, that did work. Converted the .AAC to .MP3 then dragged the new file to a playlist (and it now shows up as "music", not a "podcast", however).
It worked stand alone, as the only item on the Shuffle. Also worked when combined with other podcasts.
Thanks for your ideas, B-rock. Not sure how much I like this work-around as a long term option, but I does solve the mystery for me. I assume this has something about the .AAC compatibility of this particular podcast with the Shuffle?

Almost 100% likely in this situation.
If you want to move the podcast from Music back to Podcasts, right->click on the file and choose Get Info. When the GI window appears, click the Options tab and change the Media Type to Podcast.
