I think there are 2 problems with battery life.  The first issue is a software issue that affects all of us.  If we follow the settings recommended on these boards and recycle the battery several times, then our phones will be fine.   The second is a hardware issue affecting only some phones.  I had a phone with terrible battery life.  During a 10 minute phone conversation, I would use about 17% of the phone's battery life.  I did the restore using itunes then was draining the battery around 5-6% during a 10 minute phone call.  That was still way too much battery life.  I just replaced my phone with a new one through apple and now I am getting 2-3% during a 10 minute phone call.   This should be the range everyone is at and would meet Apple's advertised phone use of 8 hours for phone calls.   I did follow the recommended settings with my new phone.

Not sure if I can be bothered.

There's clearly something seriously wrong with the phone as since I last posted when I had 60%, it has not only gone down by anotehr 5% but the usage says another half an hour when all I did was spend ten mins on it

    Exactly WHAT is "USAGE TIME"?

Here's why I offer this up for discussion:

    - Charged phone fully and unplugged it.

    - An actual clock time of about 23 hr. the battery is at 51% and "General/Usage Standby" time shows 22 hr 26 min. Which I believe as I intentionally didn't use the phone much.

    - BUT, the "Usage" time shows 4 hr. 53.

Now, I know the phone wasn't unlocked for more than about a half hour during that period. And furthermore, doing the math, it's improbable that within a 23 hour clock time the phone could have 23 hr Standby + 4 hr 53 min of Usage time.   Either the "Usage" time is totally screwed up, or the phone can be in Standby and Use mode at the same time (seems improbable).

    Any thoughts?

BTW, my battery life started out as only about 12 hr. total, but I followed these ideas from the forum (only these) to get current results:

    1) Did full discharge/full charge twice.

    2) Did a Settings/Reset - Reset All Settings

    3) Shut off Safari syncing.

Note I never did a DFU or iTunes restore (other than originally restoring the new phone from iTunes backup. )

    Hope this helps.

    Jeff2006, this is from http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

    • Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.
    • Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep.

So as I understand it, Standby includes Usage.

Over the first week I had the same issues everyone is describing and I also tried all the same fixes with no real 'fix'.

Last Friday I was on my Wifi and didn't have internet so I switched off the wifi to use my LTE instead. At that point I let my phone charge overnight leaving the Wifi off. The next day I started off with my phone charged 100%. After about 3 or 4 hours it was still at 100%.

It's been over 3 days and i'm slowly trickling down to 23% capacity on that single charge.

I only turned wifi back on briefly to backup on I cloud and it wook 1% right away. After that I turned it off and it seems to be running strong.

Obviously wifi needs to work and i'm hoping this gets fixed but it seems to be doing the trick for my phone.

Running on my last charge for the last 72+ hours!

Well I was on my phone for about an hour today and lost about 4% battery life. That was checking Facebook and about 20 emails and some messing with the Internet. Is that good.

Well, after a DFU restore, i am still seeing my battery drop 1% every 2 minutes when doing nothing. I'll scan these posts again to see if there's something i'm missing, but i'm wasting too much time on this. The product should be fit for purpose, which it isn't. Apple kit used to "just work". This phone requires so much time debugging, it's insane!

If i can't find a quick solution, i'll be returning mine for a refund. All my kit is Apple and i've always has an iPhone, but this mess is seriously enough for me to look at an android alternative. It's a shame, but who can put up with this madness? We have businesses to run and lives to lead!

As a note, i'm in the UK with no access to LTE. I'm on the Three network, and have no option to disable 3G as their network does not support 2G

Have you tried sticking your right thumb - and it has to be your right - in your left ear whilst whistling the theme to the Golden Girls?

I'm going to to try this when I get home. Hopefully this will fix it

Conditioning the battery has made a world of difference for me. I am at 12 hours 30 minutes standby and 4 hours usage and I'm at 60 percent. Last week my phone would have died by now.

No, but I have tried performing puja to my phone. I think it's Siri's fault - it's given iPhone a massive ego

When u say "conditioning", do you mean calibrating (killing and then fully recharging)?

    thanks

Tim, that was very helpful; thanks!

Now I have to figure out what the phone's been doing in the background for so much of the day (seems far more activity that Push could account for.)  It would be nice to have a utility that provided a record of what background apps did what and when...

There is another view that might be of interest: Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Diagnostics & Usage Data. It shows crash logs.

I have read that some users have found useful data in there, highlighting apps / processes that have gone amuck. I haven't personally found much useful data in there yet though.
