on my ipad when I set up email accounts, i can enter multiple addresses in the Email field, separated by a comma, which is located on the keyboard far right, second symbol screen.

On my iphone 5 there's NO COMMA that I can find on any of the three Keyboard screens when you're in the Email field.

What's up with that?

I'm running ios 6 on both devices

I assume you want to know how to send emails to multiple recipients.  If that is the case what you do is open a new email message window, enter the first recipient's email address and then tap on the + and either choose the next recipient from your contact or tap cancel and then manually enter the next address and so on.

Ok just start adding "Beth" in the address window and if "Beth" has two email addresses you should be presented with a list and you choose the address you want by tapping on it

Or are you asking how to set up multiple addresses for a person in contacts?  If so in an existing contact  you tap edit and go down to email field and enter an email address.  Once you do a further window for entering another address appears and so on

no. I want to be able to choose the From address e.g. beth@gmail.com or beth@xyz.com

If you have multiple mail accounts set up on your device, when you initiate a new message just tap on the "From" field to get a pull-down choice of which account to send the e-mail from.  Note that the first time you tap, the Mail app will expose the cc: and bcc: fields, so just tap the "From" field again to see the pull-down.

I don't have my iPad right now, but this is how it works on my iPhone with iOS 6.

But the keeping the multiple accounts active is pulling copies of the same email.

Can you explain what you mean by that?

Now I understand.  I think your only options are to either:

1- Stop forwarding xyz e-mail to Yahoo, create a xyz account on your iPhone, leave it turned on, and view all your mail from the "All Inboxes" folder which unifies all your accounts into one place.  When you reply to a message it will use whatever From address the original message came to (or you can change the From as described above).

2- Keep forwarding xyz e-mail to Yahoo, create an xyz account on your iPhone, leave it turned on but disregard messages in its Inbox and only look at the ones in Yahoo.

#1 won't help you if you're forwarding xyz e-mail to Yahoo to consolidate e-mail on your computer as well as your iPhone.

I think what you are asking is if there is a way of sending the same message to one recipient from two separate accounts at the same time?  IF that is the case then I dont think that was ever possible.  I have looked on my ipad and on my iphone and it is only possible to select one email account as the default account and when you send a message to someone it appears to them as having come from the default account

Beth, I ran into the same issue.

    What I did was this:

    (1) Go into the Note app and enter your comma-delimited list of email addresses.

    (2) Copy the list and paste it into the Mail settings where you tried to enter it.

    It works fine that way.

Note however that if you are using the default Gmail settings there isn't a separate field for your email address and username - they are the same. So you will get an error when you try to save. However, if you use the manual setup where there are separate fields for username and email address this will work.

You can even add the extra email addresses to another non-Gmail account and when you try to send you can select the alternate email address.
