Q: iOS 6 and Home Sharing on iPad 3 wi fi finally working kinda ...

Last night, after updating my iPad 3 to iOS 6 home sharing would not work at all, music nor video. Spent time with settings, making sure Apple ID and passwords were correct, rebooting iPad, rebooting iMac and updating Mountain Lion, verifying it works on my other iDevices running iOS 5.1, reviewing articles online and discussions here. NADA.  I did a reset of my settings, nope ... No go. Decided to do a backup - reset all - restore in the morning(today).

Could not sleep, awoke around 2AM; rebooted iPad, iMac was already running and iTunes runs 24-7. AND IT JUST STARTED WORKING! Kinda. Did not do the reset of the ipad. Video appears fine, I've quit it in multi-task bar more than a few times, restarted iTunes a few times and video is good to go as before. However, in Music, the only thing displayed is Playlists, Songs, Genre. Completely blank display under Artists, Albums, composers. I have left it on oe of these pages for at least ten minutes in case it was a loading issue (around 17K songs in my iMac's iTunes library. ... This problem does not occur on the 5 devices (iPads 1&2-iPhone 4's still using iOS 5.1.) Its just as quick as it was before updating itunes. I've read some discussions on this site where it took 45 minutes or longer to load those pages on an iPhone 4S, also a large library. No way I'm going to do that. Will not be updating my other devices until that issue is resolved and I have more confidence with my iPad 3 and the new iOS.

Rather than keeping myself at this issue, I'll wait a few days peek at AppAdvice this weekend, then call support middle of next week if not resolved by update or Apple doing something with their servers or whatever.

Having to spend this much time getting the new iOS to where it is now is not what I've come to expect from Apple. There was plenty of time to beta; and if it is a function of their servers then its poor planning and execution. I'm a user, not a beta tester. Very disappointed. I use the iPad mainly for reading, video and music enjoyment. Sure I use some of the native apps for reminders, etc. but do not need it for business or ...  Maybe it's time to start exploring Amazon's and Google's offerings for the next iteration of hardware and software. Too bad, but this is what secrecy & arrogance breeds ... Apple may be at its apex and will follow the pattern of Microsoft.

While I realize the previous paragraph is not going to fix anything, I certainly earned the right to vent on an Apple support forum.

I did this - and it worked for a while.  Then, about 12 hours after I rebooted the Mac hosting the iTunes library (power outage), I was back to the same problem - incomplete list through home sharing on the iPad via home-share with iOS6.

Before those 12 hours, it was working!  This flakiness appears to be a problem with the iOS6 version of iTunes.  My other Macs that access the homeshare are fine.  The iPad on iOS5 - also fine.

Turning off home sharing on all devices (I have 6 in total) to keep resetting the share is unacceptable.

Anybody else experiencing the strange phenomenon that Apple TV is working just fine? I can manage my home sharing library perfectly through my Apple TV remote - I just can't do it off my iPad w/ iOS 6.

Also, some people are saying that the problem is an iTunes problem. I don't think so. My issues started immediately after I updated to iOS 6 on my iPad, not when I updated iTunes earlier in the month. Home sharing functionality on AppleTV seems to further that claim.

I first reported the issue to Apple Support on 9/21, I was at the second (expert) advisor level and the advisor was as confounded as I. I sent her a bunch of info that day and it was forwarded to engineering immediately. Three days later they asked for more info and I sent reports then regarding my iMac and screenshots of iTunes. I attempted going back to iTunes 10.6.3 recently from some of the info I read that there were good results doing that, to no avail for me. I did it at the request of my Apple Advisor.

Engineering has had this issue since 9/21. Yesterday when discussing the situation with the support advisor, her tone was one of frustration that she was unable to provide any update since she has not heard back from engineering and her hands were tied because its the most she can do at ths time.

Whether the problem lies with iTunes or iOS, is irrelevant to me. When I asked why there is so much attention to Maps and not Home Sharing, she told me the numbers of users actually using this feature is small. If there was only some public acknowledgment that ths was an issue, at least there would be a positive feedback that they are going to give it some attention.

As it is, we're all just twisting in the wind.  My advisor said she would give me an update this Friday. I don't expect any news to be truthful. We seem to be to small a subset. That it works for some and by different means makes it all worse. I read where there is a change in iOS 6 for Music Match, done on purpose to simplify, maybe that has an affect on us. Right now it's all guesswork and Apple seems to have a deaf ear.

    Regards to all,

    SG45,

Ahhh the media and their motives...that should add some spice to this thread.

My personal theory is that MAPS is getting the coverage because it represents the

Appple vs Google battle of the titans.  If there wasn't the Google angle, I bet

the coverage would be on par with...Home Sharing.

BTW, I am amazed you actually have the patience to interact with the support staff.

    Better you than me.

    Patience???

I've decided to purchase the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 32GB and sell my iPad 3. I'm done with Apple. My next hardware upgrades will be Android devices and a PC. If I hear anything from support that's helpful I'll post it. I will not be holding my breath.

    Hi, Brian2001!

I had the same problem today. I restarted my Mac and artists list (in iPad3) was incomplete. I deactivated/activated home sharing in iPad and all albuns and artistis were full listed.

It is !@&!%!%#  to deactivate/activate home sharing sometimes to recover the library but it is the only think that works. I hope Apple fix the problem soon.

scopeguy45, you wrote the following earlier in this thread:

"Once I restart iTunes, it takes a while to load my video library, but eventually the circle of doom does fill in and my video library will load. I only keep 30-50 videos in it at a time. Interesting problem though occurs (I have also given this to the Advisor); though videos play, after watching say a movie for over 15-20 minutes, I cannot get the iPad to pause or display the controls ... The movie will continue to play and I can hear the audio over my Bluetooth earphones after I close the app with my finger gestures. Only way to get it to stop including the arrow display in upper right and corner is to close the video app in the multi task bar, reopen the video app(displays dark grey) and then close by using home button, still plays audio until I close it in multitask area second time!  Weird, huh?"

I have the exact same issue, except with an iPad2.  Controls just vanish -- had no issues with ATV2.  Everything is updated to the latest and greatest version.  Apple has really screwed this up royally. I have an appointment with support in the morning, we'll see if they give me the same run around you have gotten.

My iPad 2 doesn't seem to display 'HOUSE MARK' for home sharing.

About an hour spent.... and found here.

The only thins I can do is...Waiting for the time
that Apple troubleshoots on next update...

I have the similar situation as magnusxxx (iPhone 4S), and the same problem as described by scopeguy45's original post.

Just sounding off to be counted... hoping that Apple would not consider us guys as just a "small" number of users experiencing a "hardly" used feature.

    Thanks.

I have several computers on home sharing as well as an Apple TV and an iPad.  Like so many of you, Home Sharing is working without any problem on all devices except the iPad.  I'm using photo stream sharing, photo sharing and music/video streaming/sharing.  No problem.

The problem I have is that the iPad disconnects from home sharing - consequently showing partial lists, partial syncs, etc.  Through my router utility, I started monitoring the devices attached to the router.  When everything is working as it should, I can see all devices attached to the router (comptuers, iPad, ATV) - no iTunes or other issues when all are shown attached.

Then, I can see the iPad drop out of the router's attached device list.  No warning, it just drops off the list.  At that time, I went to one of the computers and could see that iTunes still showed the iPad attached (I realized later that this is a false positive because iTunes has not attempted to access the iPad and it still thinks it's attached.  When I attempt to do something with the iPad through iTunes, iTunes now realizes that the iPad is not attached and the circle of death begisn to spin and the iPad drops off the iTunes list.

I did what so many of us have done and I restarted the computer and the iPad and the router attched device list once again shows the iPad attached and the iPad once again appears in the iTunes list.  Then I tried to determine why the iPad was detaching from the router and subsequently dropping from iTunes.  I determined that I could duplicate the problem by allowing the iPad to sleep/lock.  Once it went to sleep (locking after 2 minutes) I would see it drop from the router and from iTunes.  When I set the sleep/lock to never and restarted the computer and the iPad, the connections would be made as expected and they would not drop from the router or iTunes as long as the iPad was not allowed to sleep/lock.  They would not disconnect at all.  Everything is as it should.

I now had a new Google search criteria when searching for a solution for the problem (iPad disconnects from router - this is really the core problem).  There is a post on another blog where someone spoke to Apple and was told that this is a problem with both the iPad and iPhone running under iOS6.  It's interesting because when the iPad wakes, I can go immediately to the ATV or internet without a problem.  Only iTunes is the issues.  I'm concluding that the problem is either iOS6 is not communicating its status to iTunes correctly or iTunes is not receiving the communication from the iPad correctly.  This can occur is iOS6 is sending a status that iTunes expects because it has changed in iOS6 or it's just a bug in iOS6.  Regardless, iTunes is not recoginizing that the iPad status has changed post iOS6 update.  The status from iOS6 to the router stating that its status has changed from sleep to awake is working because I can see that the router recognized that the iPad is now attached after it wakes (back on the router attached list).

I really think this is an ITunes issue because the ATV, new photo streaming feature and router know that the iPad is now awake and attached.  From my testing, iTunes is the only one that still thinks the ipad is not attached.  Also, this is happening on both the iPhone and iPad.  Consequntly, we may see this mysteriously working after a background patch to iTunes or a simple patch to iTunes.  It appears that Apple is working on this.   I know that all problems go away if I tell the iPad to never sleep/lock.  I would like to know if anyone having these problems can solve the issue if they set their iOS6 iPhone's and iPad's lock feature to Never.  Hope this helps and I'm looking forward to hearing the results of some of your tests.

Sorry for the long post, but I can duplicate the problem or have it go away at-will.  Quite a revelation for me.

Do you think this issue only manifests itself for those with a large iTunes library? For instance, I've over 15000 songs in iTunes. I'm guessing iPhone/iPad loads the whole library .xml file across the network and into local device memory, and larger library means a larger XML file.

    Just putting it out there

Good question, groovyf.  No, I don't think it has anything to do with size.  I'm testing photos, streams, videos, etc, fed from multiple computers, iPad, iCloud all with 2-way access by all devices including the ATV.  Consequently, I'm keep the number of media files to a minimum ( a couple of thousand).  I'm having the same problem everyone else is having until I prevented the iPad from sleeping. 15,000 and expecially 15000 photos (new Photo Streaming feature) are loaded at once because they wouldn't fit on some devices.  Consequently, the load/streaming algorithm would load would it thinks should be loaded (number of items or size of items) at any given time.  Therefore, a need to load could occur at anytime which means that if for whatever reason the iPad or Phone went to sleep, the disconnect would occur and reconnection would not happen automatically.  At that point iTunes would stop "working" because the device went away.  So, considering my last senario, I could say yes, the size of the library or shared folder could have an affect if the pad/phone went into sleep mode and disconnected.

Thinking about this situation further, a new operating system such as 6 could be passing status codes that under certain conditions are not recognized by iTunes and there is no expect reaction from iTunes or the router (such as I'm awake and back).  We would see this on both desktop and even mainframes if the interrupt or status code was not reconized by a peripheral (printer, disk drive, etc).  A patch from the peripheral company to their firmware allowing it to recoginize the new status code was usually all it took.  Or a patch from the peripheral company to give the hose computer the new code that it was looking for was all it took (the status code compatiility could go both ways).  So, with new feature such as photo streaming, etc, could very well fall into this situation.  I may be all wet on all of this.  All I know is that EVRYTHING works exactly as advertised and expected if I don't allow the iPad to sleep/lock.

One more comment...  The sleep/lock issue is showing me something that could affect the entire link no matter what the feature or activity happens to be - if for any reason the iPad or iPhone disconnects from the router, iTunes does not know that it returned.  Back to the question above - if it is constantly doing some kind of tranfer or load and you hesitate long enough (2 minutes if that's the lock duration that's set), the iPad/phone will go to sleep and disconnect and will not reconnect to iTunes again.  That (to me) is why restarting all participating devices will relink the pad/phone to iTunes because we're going back to square one and everything is looking around again to find something to connect to.  This would be a totally different process/algorithm than a device dropping out and wanting to drop back in again and iTunes not recognizing the request.

Nice find, however, why would auto-lock have any effect on video playback where the controls are no longer accessible 10 to 20 minutes into a video?  Also, disabling auto-lock is not an option on my device due to security profile installed. I think the problem is more fundamental than an iTunes patch an has more to do with networking snafus that iOS 6 has been documented to have. I would argue what you are observing is yet another symptom of that problem and not solely an iTunes issue.

I think you're missing the point.  I don't know what the fix is and I really don't know what or who is the culprit (the OS, the router, itunes, the network card).  All I know is if the iPad goes away (other blogs say it happens with the iPhone) Itunes will not see the device when it returns.  I mention iTunes and the pad/phone because when monitoring the network, I can see the iPad go away and reconnect, but iTunes does no see the reconnection.  As I stated earlier, if I can make the iPad disconnect from the router (I can do that by having the iPad sleep), but it will not reconnect with iTunes.  I don't know which end is causing the problem or what other circumstances could cause the iPad to disconnect.

As far as your stream, if during your video stream the iPad, your computer, your router or anything else causes the iPad to not be seen by iTunes and the connection drops for a brief moment, you can expect any of the other devices to recconnect automatically.  Dropped signals happen all the time.  I've been able to prove that if the iPad goes away for any reason, iTunes will not see it when it comes back.  I ony mention the sleep/lock because it is what I used to make the iPad go away and it happened to be the only thing on my network that was causing it to go away and consequently what was causing my problem.  Turning off the sleep/lock is only to say that if you can turn it off and everything works, then if what I've read is correct, a fix is on its way.

I've been able to see this happen by using network monitoring utilites a well as system logs.  In you case, I don't know what might cause the 2 to disconnect -- I'm just saying that if it happens, the 2 won't reconnect automatically.
