Q: iBook RAM or logic board problem?

I have inherited an early 2004 iBook (1 Ghz, 256MB built in RAM - with 1GB RAM in the memory slot). When I got the iBook six months ago I immediately updated it to OS10.5. I remember checking in the "About this Mac" window after the update and noting the OS 10.5 and the 1.25 GB of RAM - but also noting that the machine was running slow. I haven't used the machine in all this time, but when I was using it today it had a "Panic" attack and now it no longer recognizes the 1GB RAM in the memory slot.

I have tried inserting another 1GB RAM chip, but it doesn't recognize that one either.

The odd thing is, when there is no memory in the memory slot, the "About this Mac" window shows "256MB 0x0000". I have never seen 0x000 written next to the RAM information before. What does it mean? And, why is it no longer recognizing the RAM chip?

    Hello,

First Try to reset the PMU and then try your memory module back in the slot.

After that see if it then recognize the memory.

Thanks for the suggestion to reset the PMU. Unfortunately this did not help.

I have tried inserting yet another RAM module into the slot - without success. This is now three RAM modules it will not recognise... unless there is another possible reason for this, my guess is that I will be looking for a replacement logic board.
