Ditto: it seemed to start as a result of magicprefs starting to have a crashing fit under 10.8.1 whenever I woke from sleep. Magicprefs has resolved itself with the recent updates, but the continual bouncing icons after waking from sleep continue. Mail seems to be the one application that doesn't respond to a force quit instruction, and while the Finder will quit it won't relaunch, thus requiring a held power button restart. Something's seriously wrong. I've repaired permissions etc.

Similar problem with Moutain Lion on my iMac. Won't wake up from sleep, but just freezes. Happens about half the time. Have to reboot.
Honestly, OS X is getting like how Windows used to be! Not what I bought a Mac for!

Boot into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift Key on restart. It will take a while to boot and will show a progress bar. Once it finishes checking the drive, it will boot to the login screen (so know your password if you have it set to auto-login).
Try using it while in safe mode and see if the problems persist.
If it runs ok, you have some third-party software running that is causing problems.
Do you use any Anti-Virus or "Clean-up" software? If so, that may be the problem. Both types of software provide little benefit and tend to cause lots of problems.
