Manufacturer defect - problem solved
Just wanted to chime in. I was having a similar problem. My phone would turn off on its own and would not power back on unless i plugged in it into a charger. It was then sporatic, sometimes powering up with full functionality indicating a full charge and other times with limited fuctionality (no sound, no wifi and no service) and would die as soon as I unplugged the charger. I took it the MacAuthority and they told me even though my phone was only 4 months old, there was nothing they could do because of the little red dot in the headphone jack. Whatever indicating chemical they use must be pretty sensitive because my phone has never been wet and I can only assume that moisture from the air activated it.
Anyways, my last hope was to take the thing apart and try to fix the problem myself - I was hoping maybe there was some moisture in the phone or something, but to my suprise I immediately saw a tiny, out of place screw bridging two contacts coming from the battery. I was caught so off guard because, while obviously this could be the problem, Apple does such a job of putting forth an air of precision and quality. Took the screw out, put it back together and the thing works fine. Guess I got lucky.

Thank you. This trick help. I got worried and thought of taking the phone to an apple store. Initially, thought that it might be a problem with memory. But,it was not. This forum made it. Thanks again !

I have an iPhone 4G & it was updated to latest iOS which 6.0 last Saturday. And I done the jailbreake & try to install siri port. After installing siri device requested to restart. But it was unable to restart to normal mode. It has show only Apple Logo. Cant turn off even. Then I've disassembled the phone (This is not recommended by Apple) by my self & disconnected the battery connector & re-connect it again. After that i followed the 2nd step of this article. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3763
Then I plugged the iPhone into the PC & restored via iTunes. Now its working fine.. Thanks for all articles & comments in this discussion.
Thanks a lot guys....

My 4s turns off with 10-20% of power left
Try to turn it back on but it shows no power animation
Plug it into charger and it immediately turns itself on and shows the 10-20% of power that I knew it had
Been doing every few weeks for almost a year
apple phones don't work properly
Android phones don't work properly
And Nokia phones don't work properly
Spent thousands on mobile phones over the past 10 years
Still searching for a phone that 'just works'
Defo won't be buying any of the above phones again

thank you all for the comments in these posts.
I would like to add my case as it might be interresting for the one or the other.
My IP 4S 16GB is turnin off below 25°C. So actually room temperature. and shows the same sympthoms as explaned in the earlier posts. So what i need to do in order to get it working, i need to heat it up and then press (
Home/ONOFF aprx. 10Sec) and then press ONOFF and it turns on. It stay alive until it cools down and swith off by itself.
Did not send it to Apple yet, but as soon as i have a response i post it.

Mine did the same exact thing. The "doc connector" was fried. Caused by debrit getting trapped in it or moisture. Apple should have told you this. Try getting it replaced by your local shop. Should only cost $50 max. Let me know if this works =)

I am having the same/slightly worse problem. My phone randomly turned off today so i plugged it into a wall charger and after about 5 minutes got a "connect to itunes screen" at this point i decided to try restart it using the home and on/off button. My phone turned back on as normal then quicky shut down again. Its been 8 hours now, it wont turn on, randomly shows the apple symbol for a few seconds and I cant connect it to itunes as it is not being recognised. I'm really upset at the thought of losing all my content esp. photos. Any suggestions? please note: restarting the phone using the home button is definitely not working

I too am having this exact problem as of 10/25
I have noticed the phone (4S) has been a little slow in navigating through its own pages over the last couple of days and I also know that I am using a lot of memory (over 14 of my 16 GB) now today it froze up while opening an app. I tried the hard reset (home/sleep) then the phone shut down and now I too have just the apple logo showing and disappearing for a few seconds at a time. I left the phone plugged into the wall all night and it did the same thing...all night.
I am hoping to avoid restoring the phone as I have some recent videos of my sons first little league season that I have not saved to my computer.
I did hard resets for hours last night, I plugged it into ITunes, I plugged it into the wall, heck, I even tried playing with the vibrate switch on the side (since that worked for someone else in this thread) all to no avail...
So any other solution would be greatly appreciated.
