For what it worth, I also had the stuttering issue in itunes after the most recent itunes update; I did not ever have this issue in the past with any version of os x (currently on Mountain Lion).  I was able to eliminate the issue by clearing all caches (including Flash & Java), as well as using ccleaner to clean and repair disk permissions.

My device is a 2010 iMac i3 with 12GB of RAM.

Hope this helps a few of you out there.

iMac, 27" i7 3.4 with 16 gigs ram.  Seems to be a common spec with this issue.

Tsaintc, it doesn't matter for most of us.  A fresh install on the computer and wiping the contents of the hard drive where everything is new and the caches empty still will show the problem.  Some users have had it stop briefly, but it always has come back.

Apple thinks it's a latency issue, I've heard it's a power management issue, and also that it's heat related.   It could also be the drivers they are using in conjunction with some or all of these things.

I'm hopeful, but if they don't get this sorted out soon, I'm done with Apple.  There aren't any words to describe how annoying this is.

27" 3.4 i7 as well.  I've seen some lower spec systems here as well, and wonder if the graphics card (6970) has something to do with it.

I have the audio stutter (no other issues) on my 27" 3.4 i7 with 2GB gfx card.

Main triggers for it were gaming (StarCraft), any heavy work in Photoshop/Lightroom/Illustrator, or sometimes even watching YouTube or other online video (both Flash and HTML5).

Apple was unable to duplicate the problem at their genius bars and basically told me that I was a liar. The level of arrogance shown by one "genius" in particular absolutely blew my mind. I finally gave up and rolled back to Lion because I need my computer to help pay my bills and like being able to have music while I work.

If anyone from Apple would like to contact me, I can happily provide sound recordings from my iPhone along with other helpful links detailing the problem from around the internet.

    iMac 27-inch, Mid 2011 3.1 GHz Core i5. 8 GB RAM. Radeon HD 6970M 1GB.

Same s h i t. Main triggers are Visualizer running with Music. Also EVE Online with Teamspeak comms just about playable on low quality; and, on that front, I can forget about using my Sennheiser USB headset (it's even worse). I have to plug my headphones into the jack and use built in mic for comms to even get it close to working.

But my Linux VM works fine, so I have at least one decent OS on my Mac

    Same here. I have a 27" 3.4 i7 with 24 GB RAM.

FUll size video or game triggers the problem.

Same problem here... after 10 min annoying cracks & pops. Very iritating if you working 8 hours with audio a day. Is Mountain-Lion been tested at all? Maybe next time aim for Cristmas instead of the beginning of a schoolyear and test what you have created! I like apple a lot but lately they start to SUCK MORE & MORE... Sinds Lion my Wifi is dropping every 5 sec. (Not a shame, it still works) but now this?! It reminds me on the old days when I was using Windows. Spending hours and hours time only to try to fix stuff you never heard off instead of using it... Next time i wait a year to upgrade! (if you still wanna call it that way)

APPLE !!!! STUFF LIKE THIS WAS THE WHOLE REASON WHY ME (and probably a million more) LEFT OTHERS AND JOINED THE MAC-FAMILY. CAN'T YOU BRING QUALITY ANYMORE LIKE STEVE JOBS DID?! THATS WHERE WE PAY FOR !!!

    Guys,

I can't believe they shipped this system.

Their customers are largely artists. I'm running a studio and the OS can't even play back iTunes!?  There's 33pgs of complaints and Apple has done...nothing?

How do we get our money back?  The system can't play audio!  They didn't test it on iMacs before they shipped it?

Seriously they are already going down hill, didn't take long.

Bru1seBrubaker said it well, the reason we are on Mac is because these things don't happen.

If they keep adding pointless features at the expense of basic things like AUDIO I won't be on Mac.

Fix it.  And issue a release stating you guys are doing something.

2 1/2 months after its release, yet Mountain Lion is no closer to working properly.

33 pages, over 25,000 views, and almost 500 posts on *this forum alone*, and Apple still hasn't stepped up to the plate to solve this most serious error.

As this article (http://bit.ly/Tcki7L) and dozens of similar ones from market analysts have said, it is quite clear that with the sad passing of Steve Jobs, Tim Cook's emphasis is on revenue first and quality second.

Well, he has succeeded. Millions of copies of Mountain Lion sold.

Screw the thousands of loyal customers with an almost non-working system now.

Tim Cook, are your proud of yourself? Are you happy that you've made quota?

Are you even reading this. Do you even give a ****?

Or are you busy getting your next bank deposit ready?

I have a 3.4Ghz i7 / 6970 2GB / 2011 iMac with the problem.  My wife's 3.1Ghz i5 / 6970 1GB 2011 iMac does not have the issue.  I have only noticed the issue while gaming.  It starts after about 10-15 minutes.  After about an hour my sound is completely whacked and i have to restart the game to fix it.  This occurs either windowed or full screen.  It is worse with 64 bit clients than with 32 bit clients.  I can watch full screen videos and stream HD full screen video at full resolution without any issues.  So, at this point my mac is mostly an expensive windows box since i am bootcamping the games i play most often.
