Upgraded yesterday from an Iphone 4 to the 5.
Podcast/Itunes downloads were extremely slow over wifi. Also received a text this morning saying I had used 65% of my 3GB limit, followed a half hour later with another text saying I had used 90% ***? Called ATT and they said I had actually only used .09GB and this was a system error.
Have yet to see any more overage messages, but the horrid wifi speeds concern me.
I too am having wifi issues. I go to the WiFi settings, which properly shows me a list of nearby signals. Here at work, I press my network name and the checkmark displays next to the network name. Great.
But then I wait 3-5 seconds...POOF! The entire list disappears and it reverts to 4G/LTE. I select my network name, checkmark, and it happens all over again. This also happens when I select other network names, not just my work one. And this happens at home.
iOS 6.0 on iPhone 5.
So, I just got back with my iPhone 5 replacement from the Apple Store (black, 64 gig, GSM(Rogers). Both the original iPhone 5 and the new one are using the Apple WiFi chipset.
This new version is working as it should with my wifi network. No issues. We will see if things change. I seriously considered buying a new Apple Extreme router while I was at the store. My dual band netgear is 2 years old.
I do get the sense as others have recently posted, this is more about wifi standards deployment on the iPhone 5 and iOS 6. As I mentioned in my original e-mail, my previous iPhone 5 had issues with my local wifi (netgear, ddwrt and 1st gen apple time capsule). However, speed on my hospital wifi (LEAP), was fantastic.

That is both good news and hysterical.
So many of us have been trying to give them a sample iPhone with issues and Apple has repeatedly been too polite to accept, or only accepts after much much insistence that they really do deserve this gift. I certainly hope they don't feel so guilty about being the recipients of our largesse that they are then just packing them back up and re-gifting them ASAP.
Me and my Wife's iPhone 5's are having the same issue with spotty Wifi in the home whereas before with our iPhone 4 & 3GS, repectively, Wifi was perfectly fine. Guess we'll just have to wait til Apple issues a patch to fix this.
Black 64 Gig Verizon Iphones seem to be the biggest offender. I have no idea why the 64 Gig version is the worst but it is. I have Black 64 gig and it *****. Drops WIFI every 15 seconds.
FIX IT APPLE or I'm going Galaxy. I can't take this anymore.

I have been keeping up and have read just about everything posted. Im not too tech savy so some of of them i couldn't really comprehend (lol). I posted a few pages back about my iP5 having problems (wifi range & inconsistent dl & ul speeds). I never called apple support because i was able to get my 5 working (I tried all the lovely suggestions from this discussion - thanks to everyone for the possible fixes). I cleared the cache and resetted the network & it just started working (keeping fingers crossed). The only problem i have right now is the wifi range. I'm afraid to get a replacement for fear of getting a 5 with the same issue or worse. But I did want to mention something I forgot before I received my 5.
Not sure if this brings new light or not, but before I had received my iPhone 5 I updated my 4s to iOS6. I noticed as soon as I did, the battery started to drain and it kept disconnecting from wifi and switching back to 4G. I'd reconnect with no problems, but as soon as it would go into sleep mode, it would disconnect from wifi. I did think it was a little odd, but since it was seeing the wifi network whenever I would go to select it again, I thought it just was a hiccup. I only did it a couple times and thought nothing of it & didn't pay anymore attention to it. I didn't really mess with it much when I noticed it because I knew the next day I'd have the 5. And I have an iPad I access the Internet with, which I have not updated to iOS6. Anyway, now that my 4s is basically an "iPod", the wifi is constant, but I haven't been able to test it with my work's router since I'm on vacation. I suppose because it's no longer searching internet access between 4g & wifi. The router at work is a Belkin N600 dual band N. The settings are set to WPA2 mixed.
I also noticed the battery drain on my 4s got worse after the update.
BTW, my 5 has an apple chip.
So I took a half day off work and went to the Apple Store yesterday. The best part of my trip was A) they had "repair units" in stock and 2) I got a replacement. However, it wasn't the best experience overall because I encountered a lot of the same runaround as others, although luckily he was nice about it.
I explained that I had spoken to Apple Support over the phone, and detailed the troubleshooting we had done already. Of course, the first thing he does is take the phone and connect it to the Apple Store network. I didn't think it would work, because I had tried my router and a few local hotspots with no success. Just my luck, it connects no problem. Then he connects to their second network without issue. I couldn't use the unencrypted network as an excuse, because my issue was not the AES issue... just trouble connecting in general. I told him it's a widespread problem that lots of people are having and he acts like he has no clue. There was a third WiFi listed, so I asked him to try that one. He said it was the mall's wifi and that the "network is abysmal". He tried it anyway, and when it dropped the connection like he said it always does, he said that's enough for me to replace it for me. That may sound like good news... but it's very grating when he acts like he's doing you a huge favor by swapping your defective phone and even goes as far as to say that if I continue to have the same problem, they will not swap it again. That's ok dude, because I'll call Apple Support and wait for them to ship it. At least they have a clue.
I had brought my router, and of course he said he's not allowed to connect it. I suggested plugging it in but not connecting it to their network, because I could still prove the connection problem. He skirted that issue as well. While he was getting my replacement model, I pulled up this forum as well as another news article stating that Apple had admitted their was a WiFi problem. Of course he said these aren't Apple official announcements, but that he'll look at them later anyway.
So of course I get another Apple chip. I had asked him ahead of time to check the MAC address, and he said he would... but of course he was just lying to get me out of the store. I connected to at least 5 different WiFis through out the mall before I left with no problem, and another community WiFi when I was at the bar later on. I encountered no issues whatsoever, so I tried to stay optimistic.
Naturally, when I got home and tried my Netgear WGT624v3, I had the same problem. I did some Googling, and found a forum I hadn't read before. An iPhone owner with my same router had posted back in March 2011 that he was having the same problem! That makes me feel even better, combined with the fact that I found an article on Netgear's web site addressing the concerns. (I'll post the link at the bottom) It annoys me greatly at the same time, because how has this issue existed for over a year and a half with no resolution?! My only guess is that iOS 6 made the problem worse and more widespread, and now it's finally getting enough attention. But that's only a guess.
So in the meantime, I downgraded my firmware and got connected. That seems like my only option, because as much as I would love to upgrade my router, I'm trying to avoid it because I know it's not necessary. I'm still encountering the speed issue... getting 10-10.5 down consistently, while my two computers pull 20-25 no problem. The connection seems to be slightly more stable than the last phone, although that could easily be attributed to my network and not the phone. Who knows!
Anyhow, I'm stuck now since I no longer have the same serial number that VZW issued me. I have 4GB of data in addition to the firmware workaround, so I'm covered there... I just want these issues to get resolved quickly so I can fully enjoy my device. Currently, it's tainted by the problems I've encountered and the poor service at the Apple Store, and sometimes the phone just reminds me of that. However, a slight plus is that this phone appears to be slightly better condition than my original... which is nice considering I assume a "repair unit" is probably another term for refurbished. I just hope Apple shifts gears and gets the next iOS update out, because even though the device is performing well, we all know that according to the specs, it should perform better.

I started noticing slow wifi on my iphone 5. When running speedtest, I saw that my upload speeds were consistently twice as fast as my download speeds! I tried turning off a number of different things (LTE, Cellular data, etc), but nothing worked. So, for kicks, I turned off bluetooth and now my downloads speeds are 4x my upload speeds!! Not sure why bluetooth would be the issue here, but it was. Now I just have to remember to turn it on when I get in my car...
