Yes, you lose ALL of your app data when restoring as a 'new phone'.

You can sync actual apps from iTunes, along with contacts/mail accounts/photos/etc

you do not restore it as a new phone, you restore from back up

I thought people were saying that "Restore From Backup" was causing the problem?

What I'm asking is if I do the "Setup as New Phone" will I lose all my app data, and what are all the steps involved if I do that?  Like will phone still work or do I need to go back into an AT&T store to set it up?

Unrelatedly, I'd be curious to see a break down of this battery issue.  Curious if its greater on any one of them or pretty universal.

Diz:  they are claiming that it is indeed being caused from 'restoring from a backup', thus people are restoring as a 'new iPhone' as to NOT transfer any corrupt settings/files over to the freshly restored OS 6.

Yes, phone will work properly after restoring as a new phone OR from a backup. The one that is Restored as a new phone will not have any app data that comes with the apps (any information saved like game scores,etc).... You'll have to set up each app all over again

    Thanks Handsfull

If I back it up first on itunes, then setup up "as new" THEN sync with iTunes, will it restore my app data?  Or is that just the same as "restoring from backup"?

Syncing with iTunes will NOT restore your app data. The ONLY way to keep app data is to restore from a backup....that's why people like myself get ****** when having to restore as a new phone.

Yes, exactly. I pay a lot of money to get a new iPhone very two years and I want to keep my data. Apple designed IOS to be able to restore from backup which is a great feature. If it in fact doesn't work, then that is a big hairy bug that needs to be fixed. And speaking as someone who has software engineering experience it's not really that hard of a bug to fix. Assuming that is indeed the problem. Which we don't know for sure.

    @Handsfull

When I activated my iphone5 the icloud would not connect to the network so I had to set it up as a NEW PHONE and I am having the same battery issue. So the root cause is not a corrupt APP. Yes a corrupt APP can add to the cause but it is not the ROOT cause of the battery issue.

I have tried everything from DFU reset, full charge cycle, reset network settings, and a full reset and wipe. Nothing has worked. This is definitely an iphone5 issue and not an ios6 issue. I have a 3rd generation ipad that is not having any battery issues running on ios6.

Yes ios6 has its blemishes with maps, wifi and icloud as i have both of those problems on both devices. However, the battery issue is only on the iphone5. Both devices have 4g LTE and ios6. The only difference is the processor and firmware used to implement ios6 and 4g antenna, because of the different processors (A5X vs A6).

Apple needs to address a patch that will fix all of the above issues on both processors using ios6. That is the only clear resolution to all issues that are listed in this thread.

Ahhhh!   Yeah I don't have much, but I have some things with data from my iPhone 3G that I'd want to keep since I've had it so long.  I guess I'll wait, I really wish they acknowledge it at least!  They have for maps (though I've had no problems with it), why not this?!   My guess is they are working on it and hope to put in a patch that updates/ fixes maps and fixes this all in one update.

I've barely used my phone all day and I'm done to 50%

IP4 and IP4s users are having similar battery issues, I think it's iOS on iPhones that is the issues

    @djbitty

I never said an app caused any failure.  I was simply providing help to dizman above.  Reread my post.

I have also done EVERYTHING possible to correct this issue. Yep, that means a DFU restore as a new phone....toggling everything on and off, reset settings, the list goes on. I've been with the iPhone since the 8gb 2G where I was using tmobiles service for years, keeping my unlock for longer than most people have owned an iPhone....so I'm not new to the game. The only thing I haven't tried is the sim replacement, and I just replaced it about a half hour ago and will post results when I have good info.

Also, iPhone 4 and 4s users are MOST certainly having the issue, google it.

Iphone 4 users on IOS 6? My iPhone 4 running 5.1.1 and every previous version never had this problem.

Then you haven't updated, iOS6 came out for everything 2 weeks ago.

I had iOS6 on my iPhone 4, but I only had my 4 for a day after that so I didn't notice.  My friend has a 4s and said he definitely notices a drop in the battery since upgrading it to iOS6.  He said it wasn't as bad as I describe with my 5, but that it was noticeable.

Not sure if it matters but thought I'd just say my test with LTE off has actually yielded even WORSE battery life.

I've barely used my phone today, and when I have, only some light surfing, texting, and emails, and I'm about to leave work and am down to 28%!  With LTE on yesterday I did a lot more, like podcast, and games for a little big and it didn't get to 28% till well after I'd been home for an hour or two.

I dunno if that means anything, but kinda weird.  So maybe that "struggling to hold signal" thing is a bit true, but more so with normal 4G?  Cause at work here I get about 3 bars of 4G and 2 bars of LTE.

As a side note, again typing this MSG on my phone has used up 2% of my battery life as I type it!  Oh make that 3% now.  Come on Apple

I Ran another side by side test of the iP5 vs 21/2 year old iP4

I started the day with fully charged iP4 & iP5.

    iP4 usage; 9 hours 53 min, standby 12hrs 43min. 58% battery left.

iP5 had less than 4 hours of usage and 12 hours 43 min of standby was dead,

toast at less than 4 hours of usage.

No I didnt turn everything off. Both phones had BT on, location services, icloud, etc.

however the iP4 had been playing a podcast through the speaker for almost 8 hours. I also launched 36 apps, facebook twitter, all 4 angry birds,  infinity blade 2, amazon, i'm sure you get my point.

iP5 had safari, mail, text app. Plus LTE, WIFI BT all on. thats it for the whole day. I had one 45 min call (which drained 15% of the battery) for which i used the new headphones, not the BT headset, and one 3 min call. plus did a little web surfing but not much, sent a few texts nothing major.

IT RAN OUT OF POWER! THE BLODDY THING DIED ON ME!

Went to the apple genius's again. With my iP4 and battery drained iP5.

I asked a lot of questions...

I got the same canned response. "reset settings",  "restore as a new phone".

I explained I have done all that and that i had been in before...

This is the second Genuis that didnt know anything about the battery issues.

He simply stated that "if it's software they'll have a fix soon. in the meantime I'll get you a new phone."

I didnt even ask for one. I really wanted someone to hear the issue and move it up the food chain.

    So yadda-yadda-yadda

i'm trying out a new phone (with the same sim card). Fresh out of the box . I'm gonna

let the battery drain and then charge it up. i'm not installing any of my apps until monday.

    Lets see what happens...
