If it was a sim card, I must have gotten a defective replacement.

I charged my phone to 100%(yes, i left it charging about 40 min past 100%) last night at 11 PM

Did not use the phone at all except to check on the usage status about 5 times since.

    It's 10AM now (11 hours) and it's showing 47%.  That's over 50% battery usage during 11 hours of standby.

4.8 % battery drain every hour on standby.  I will try Ace's suggestion when this battery dies today.

I've restored via dfu, disable cloud, manual mail and conditioned the battery twice. I took it out of the charger at 8:30am with 100% charge and after a 5 hour standby and 2 hour and 30 min of usage consisting of Facebook, Instagram and a few text messages between classes I'm at 55%. I wish Apple would at lest acknowledge the problem publicly.

Ok - At a very last attempt before I get rid of this phone ...I replaced my sim card with a new one and then I did exactly what Ace said to do - So far my battery is sitting at 100% for an hour which it did NOT do before.  I mean, we will see how it plays out but I just wanted to give a heads up that this may very well work for you so it's worth a shot. Thanks Ace!!!!!

Did you have any sim card problems before?

Apple have called after my logs have been given to the engineers. They have said there is no guarantee that they will be able to find anything in the logs so it is best to return the phone if it is close to its 14 day age. I'm sure they are just being cautious, but it is quite possible that a solution will not be found. They didn't sound very positive.

Seriously though, has anybody here tried a Samsung phone? I know that is a dirty question here, and I have only ever owned iPhone myself (well, other than every other kind of *smart* phone and pda before it),but if this iPhone 5 hasn't now stabilised or if apple can't help, I won't be getting a forth. I have to say, Google Now looks incredibly impressive. If it's as good as the videos suggest, it will be significantly better than Siri. That said, the videos for the first release of Siri looked really impressive, yet the software was is fact a piece of useless crap. Much better now of course.

    Disappointing Andy :(

I just stopped by AT&T and picked up an installed a new sim....Even though i think it will make no difference, I want to be able to say 'I've tried everything'.   I will certainly post results when I have reliable accurate information.

That's very unfortunate. Not familiar with Samsung phones but anything Google will (should) not let you down. It will ofcourse be a different experience from Apple. Samsung phones also have their share of issues as well so don't be fooled into believing it will be perfect. Perhaps a dumb suggestion, but is there anyway you could try both in parallel for a week?

If you are a Mac user, then you might want to think about how well Android phones will sync with your computers. People say that one can sync via Google calenders and contacts - I have never tried it so not sure how well it works in realitu, especially getting the correct information across for individual fields.

The market dynamics have changed since the first iPhone and Apple will either step up the ante or go down. iPhone 5 notwithstanding, my money's on the former.

Btw, did you try a new SIM as some here have done (with success)?

  • 742. Re: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4
Andy Goundry Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I haven't tried a change of sim yet. Mine was a brand new one, so it's possibly worth a shot.

Regarding sync, I don't use google or apple servers, but instead have my own CardDav an CalDav server, so as long as the droid apps support those protocols (I'm sure they do), then all will be fine. I also use gmail and not me.com or iCloud.com

The bigger challenges for me are the business apps I use tha sync between mac, iPad and iPhone. Daylite, Billings Pro and FileMaker to be exact. In reality, I suspect the need for those apps would prevent a switch to droid.

But, I personally feel that we should all avoid sticking with a brand out of apathy or loyalty. That doesn't help anyone, least of all Apple. I have a suite of macs and won't use anything else, but, that's because they are amazing. Plus, what alternative is there?

In the mobile space, i have always seen droid as a mess tbh. But, as u say, it has risen greatly, especially so with it's latest release, and Apple has slowed it's pace of innovation and it's level of quality. Apple needs to remember that in reality, even for business owners like me with a lot of expensive iOS apps, the cost of change is small. We can jump  easily, so the quality needs to be kept high. I hope they remember that.

Regarding issues with the Samsung, I'll check those out. Thanks for prompting.

Regarding trying both side by side, I can do that so long as I buy online, as online sales are covered by a legal right of return. UK stores wot allow a return.

Just got of the phone with a senior advisor at apple care.

Before sending me my 4th iphone 5 in the past 2 weeks he asked me to delete the IPSW downloaded by itunes 1 week ago and try with a fresh one in exechange of goodies from the itunes store.

So I'll try it one last time and if it doest work I'll wait for my 4th Iphone 5... after all.. if the dont work, they dont work and the more I get, the more chance I have to get a working one ! lol

Personally I don't have a problem with loyalty as such, so long as it is not blind and irrational. To me, loyalty to Apple is certainly not unjustified - as you pointed out the macs are great products, easy to use, and lets one just get on and be productive with whatever one is doing. Having said that, if and when it falls short of what I expect, I wouldn't hesitate to move on except the alternative is rather a distant second in my eyes.

In most environments, the phone follows the computer, so the even if the cost of change may not be high as you pointed out, are you going to overhaul your entire computing system and associated apps, none of which are at the root of the problem here, simply because the mobile device deosnt live up to a promised battery life? Not trying to justify the lapse in the quality of the iPhone 5, simply trying to put some perspective to the overall picture.

But by all means do check out the Samsung and feedback on what you find. One needs to future proof always, and Samsung may well take over if Apple can't handle the heat. As for UK returns, some shops do have a no questions asked return policy for example John Lewis. But any contract should give you 14 days cooling period as well so that should be low risk, although a bit of a hassle ot get a new phone contract just for the sake of checking the battery life. Alternatively, you could get yourself a mobile battery charger (http://www.just-mobile.eu/iphone/gum.html) as a stop gap arrangement till the update arrives or Apple loses the plot, which incidentally is not entirely impossible.

Either way, good luck and hope the iPhone wins...;)

Where is the IPSW located/which folder?

Never mind.....found it, going to try that tomorrow after I find out if this new sim made a difference.  Sounds like you have a motivated senior advisor.

I agree that recently the phone had become an extension of the computer. Even more recently, the computer and phone have both become equal extensions of the cloud. I agree that having apps on all my devices is an absolute blessing!

However, thankfully, the most important data we carry around with us (calendar, contacts, email, messages, etc) is mostly based on open standards now. CalDav, CardDav, IMAP, SMS, etc. Even documents are synced across platforms now with the likes of Dropbox and Google Drive, etc. So, to me, the only apps that really seem to tie us into a platform are those few that are specifically mac only and that only have an iOS client. That's a bummer for me, because my business runs on such apps (marketcircle, and they aren't planning to support droid), so if i did jump ship, i'd have to depend more on the ipad and probably get an iPad mini when they come out.

But, let's be really clear here though - for me, this conversation is not about battery life not living up to expectations. I am personally not going to be complaining if my battery dies at a rate of 1% an hour on standby, even if that's half of what apple propose. 1% will get an almighty salute from me! What i'm concerned about is 22% loss an hour, and downloads of 1.5Gb in 2 hours whilst on standby! That's just plain unusable. That's just wrong. How can i go out on a business trip with a phone like that? Also, why should i disable iCloud to be able to use the phone? Hasn't that signicicantly disabled my device to cloud relationship?

Anyway, just to add some further perspective, these are just phones, and our businesses and lives will carry with or without them.

Oh, and thanks for the note about 14 day contract cool off!

PS. My final words is NO!!! (to Apple) We can't overlook the fact that we're wasting billable hours talking about this. That's another reason i feel like throwing in the towel.
