Q: Xyz@me.com. Vs xyz@icloud.com

I just noticed today that apple has given Me a new email address. I still have my "@me.com" But I now have a "@icloud.com". Both allow me to send email. Both also receive email; fortunately they both funnel into my iCloud account.

My question is: Why?

Why did Apple bother to assign me this new email address? Is there some kind of advantage to the iCloud address versus the me address? It looks Like Apple plans on continuing both email addresses.

No advantage to the iCloud.com address. It's just an optional extra address you can use or ignore.

All new accounts (and aliases including any you create) will be @icloud.com to reflect the iCloud branding: but obviously bedlam would result if they cancelled existing @me.com addresses and these will be maintained. As Julian says you can use either or both as suits you.
