Q: Straight talk SIM or iOS 6 problem?

I've tested this and tried it with an Active T-Mobile Sim and a very old one that didn't have service anymore and both work the same the only difference I could tell was the active sim enable the tether APN settings and thus allowed personal hotspot to be activated, while the old one did not.

Yes I used the pre-paid plan on T-mobile and I have a couple of dollars left on T-mobile. Anyway today I tried the sim swap method again and I have not rebooted. Now, my imessage is working very well and mms too. However, I'm afraid of rebooting.

you can help ensure the settings retain by switching Airplane mode On for a while and then back off anywhere from 2-20 seconds should do the trick; it's kinda like a ruber stamp to seal the deal, then you can reboot without worry. I've rebooted countless times since and yet to have any problems with any of the services.... Good Luck

The iOS products partly brick themself depending on what SIM you put in them or even depending on what APN you use.

For ATT and other operators Apple on ATTs request enforce barring functionality and access to settings such as tethering when you put an ATT SIM in any iPhone. The problem here is that the iOS devices is not smart enough to understand it is a SIM from a carrier (MVNO like Straight Talk, H2O etc) using ATTs network (and not ATT itself) where you need to edit settings to get data working.

Surprisingly this is the same for unlocked devices that you have purchased at full price. Insert a SIM from an ATT MVNO and the HW/SW functionality you have purchased vanishes.

This is all against FCC rules from a Net Neutrality point a view but how can people stand a company that takes functionality away on unlocked full price devices based on what SIM you put in?

I am not aware of any other manufacturer that would even consider this

It may take a few times to get the APN settings to pop up.

NOTE: Stay on the APN settings screen for an extra minute or two to make sure APN doesn't switch back to "Phone" before you exit. I discovered this on my last attempt.

NOTE 2: This SIM swap method will work with the Verizon micro-SIM from the 3rd Gen. iPad as well.

Hey I just wanted to ask with this T-Mobile - Sim swap method does it continue to work if I power off my device and power it back on? or will I have to keep doing it everytime I turn off my phone?

Oh thank god! I was a little worries lol thank you good sir, I ordered a T-mobile micro some just today off of eBay for 0.99¢ :D I should be here Friday and I can't wait ^_^

I have a 3gs, and it will not hold the settings no matter what I try.... any other suggestions?

Make sure you go to http://unlockit.co.nz/ and install the straight talk profile before you start the process, I've bad your plobkem too and it finally worke when I tried this, beat of luck to you :)

If you're using the SIM swap method talked about below, do NOT install unlockit.co.nz APN profile. It will not work, and you'll be wasting your time.

Well you must be factory unlocked because I'm not and the sim swap method didn't work for me unless I installed the apn from unlock it, but just experiment what works for you am go with it

Mine is locked to AT&T, but it is the 4S.

The 3GS may not work quite the same. I have one here, but I don't have a full-size T-Mobile SIM card to try it.

Using unlockit.co.nz will get data working, but NOT MMS.

1.go to http://www.icopybot.com/download.htm

2.download and install ibackupbot for your os

3.make a back up of your iphone in itunes

4.open ibackupbot

5.select your backup

6.edit these two files

SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

   6. Then click the checkmark on those two file and restore to the iphone using iBackupBot software

   7. It should restore and after reboot MMS and data should start working.

Note that you may need to follow these instructions again if MMS stops working after an iOS update.

This does NOT work with an iPhone 4S running iOS 6. The settings will revert back immediately. I can not confirm if this is the case with any older iPhone models.

Using this method with iOS 6 sends the iPhone into several reboots after it appears to have frozen. This is when it's believed to remove the changes to the APN carrier settings.

The only way to get the APN settings to stick is using the SIM swap method.
