Just went to the apple store, was a hardware problem for me, switched to a new iPhone 5 and now I have no problems at all, was kind of lucky they had replacement phones in stock, and apple care was awesome

This is an update went to the apple store and it was a hardware problem with my iphone 5 was given a new iPhone 5. I was informed that it was a hardware problem not a software issue. If your not hearing the person on the phone or the person states they can hardly hear you call your service provider. I could hear them perfectly and they also could hear me perfectly over the speaker phone only, but once I disengaged the speaker it was the same issue. Apple was awesome and swapped it out. I have ATT so I'm not sure how the other service providers work, but goto the Apple store so they know its a on going problem and will take care of those having this issue. My iphone 5 has been working perfectly so far, but was advised to return if the issues arised once again or I had any other iphone issues... good luck guys.

I have this same issue now in Finland with Sonera as the carrier. I didn't notice these issues when I got my iPhone 5 last week, but now that I've got a case, I've experienced robotic and choppy voice from the person I'm talking to, but they're still hearing me just fine. Maybe I'll need to try without a case.

I'm having the same problem.  Especially when calling my brother on US Cellular.  I have Verizon LTE and the audio is choppy and robotic sounding and a ton of dropped calls and then the phone displays the infamous "Call Failed"  I feel a class action lawsuit a-brewing.  Apple if you're listening fix the problem or I will drop my plan and this phone it's absolute BS how much the month service costs and the cost of the "best iphone yet" fix it or android here I come.

Took iPhone to apple store. They did diagnostics and all appears to be working ok. Removed the case and have had some noticeable improvement for Bluetooth. We shall see how this resolves.

Just to follow up on my previous posts. I made an appt at the Genius Bar today. Of course I could not reproduce the problem there, but they gave me a new phone nonetheless. I have not experienced any of the poor voice quality on the replacement phone while at home or at my office (the 2 places where it was worst). I would strongly encourage anyone experiencing this problem to get a replacement phone. It certainly seems to be hardware related in my case.

Follow up on my post as well.

I didn't really believe this was a hardware issue so I wasn't really holding out hope it would be resolved by getting a replacement phone.

    Well, it was.

The voice quality IS better than on the 4 - by a noticeable margin.

    And my reception is better.

But it has a different speaker problem.

    C'est la vie.

So for those of you that went to Apple Store and got phone replaced did you also get new nano sim?  I went to apple store and they replaced phone but kept original sim. Wife still having issues.

I have 32Gb Black iPhone. LTE in most areas I travel but 3G in hometown. Use WIFI at home. No issues at all.

My wife has bad sound and "Call Failed" quite a bit in all areas WIFI, 3G and LTE area. VZW said avg call fail is around 2.2 and hers was at 6.4 from 9/22 on.

    Phone with issue:

    Verizon

    White iPhone 5

    16GB

On our second phone. Have done restore from iCloud and clean install on both to no avail.

As I am sure you all know, the SIM card has nothing to do with call quality:

"The SIM card is provided with your iPhone (or 3G iPad) by your carrier and it is used to store data about your account. It holds information such as your phone number, security data, billing information and things which help the carrier to know who is the user of the phone.

The main benefit of a SIM is that you can easily swap phones on your own. If you buy a new phone you can simply insert your existing SIM and keep on using your existing service (carrier restrictions may or may not apply, but the technologyworks that way.) "

My two 5s are working fine. Much better call quality that my old 4.

I hope your problems get solved soon.

Now that I took my case (Puro Plasma Cover) off, I haven't had the robotic call issue anymore, but a call drops surprisingly easily if I'm e.g. in a moving commuter train (i.e. the ones that don't go that fast). So I'm still wondering if there's something a little off with my hardware.

I have had (3) new iPhone 5s for a week in the Boston area on Verizon (mine, wifes and son's). I had many poor quality calls and lots of dropped calls "call failed" on my phone. Far worse call quality than my AT&T iPhone 4 was. Apple store genius did tell me that my phone had a bad sim card - that those ending in 57 were causing problems. Verizon store swapped it out today no problem - will see if my calls improve. My wife has also had more dropped calls than she had on her iPhone 4, but they didn't think her sim was bad and asked for at least 2 weeks of data before we go back to troubleshoot hers. I will try to remember to post how it goes. Wish I didn't have to hop between the stores to get it done!

I have had my  iPhone 5 (Verizon) for more than a week now - Framingham, MA area. I'm experiencing dropped calls, faded calls, bad voice reception , intermittent reception , voice loss consistently in few areas around Framingham. I am also experiencing Tinnitus(buzz in the ear) when I talk for more than 2-3 minutes, this did not happen with my iPhone 4(att). I'm not able understand if this because of  the bad HW I recieved or bad signal from VZW. I have a genius bar appointment tomorrow will see how it goes, if this doesnt get resolved will return the phone and will start using  iPhone4 :-|

I had the choppy, auto-tune sound on both reception and transmission for the Verizon iPhone 5.  Verizon tech support said to exchange the phone, the independent Verizon retailer said to go to an Apple Store, the Genius Bar there *restored* the phone, and said that the phone sounded fine to all members at the Genius Bar, and that was the best I could expect.  They did not offer to exchange the iPhone 5, and I did not insist.   On the last day of the 14-day return policy, I returned the iphone 5 and went back to AT&T service on my old iPhone 3GS.  Without prompting, one of my clients said my voice sounded much better, and asked if I got my iPhone 5 fixed.  The client sounded much better too, just like I remember the voice quality to be before switching to the Verizon iPhone 5.  I have ordered an iPhone 5 on the AT&T network, and will post the voice quality here when it arrives.
