I have a new iPhone 5.

While it works great, I have been having an issue where the screen goes dark while I'm using the device for no good reason.  The only way to get the screen back is to put the phone to sleep and wake it back up.

I've done a restore, and it doesn't seem to have helped.

I also cannot make this happen on demand.  Its random as to when it happens.

Any suggestions?  I'd like to avoid a trip to the Apple Store if possible for a swap out but I will if its a hardware issue.

Many thanks in advance!

    When you say "dark" do you mean as in the screen goes off or do you mean it is dark as in dim? I've had my phone go dim and had to manually go into settings to bring the brightness up.

    Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).

    It goes nearly dark.

    I keep my brightness off auto, so that's not an issue.

    @diesel: I've done all 3.

    did u put a screen protecter on it that was the wrong size, if so it could be covering the sensors?? wild one though id throw it out there, or a case for that matter, and sometimes it can be the way u hold it if your covering a sensor

    Nope, no screen protector.

    I've seen this happen to my wife's iPhone 4S on iOS 6 but was able to go into settings and turn the brightness back up. I'm not sure why this happens. Probably a bug that will be corrected in the next update.

    did you come up with any solutions for this? I am having the same problem. However, when I went into the apple store, they told me they needed to see it happen in order to be able to do anything about it, and as you can not make this happen on demand, I asked, well it is random, how am I supposed to show you? She then told me to take a screen shot of it when it happens.

    Well, it happened again just now, and I took a screen shot, and then when I went and looked in the photo's app, it looked like normal brightness, so I am not sure where to go from here.

    I went to my local Apple store and they replaced the phone without much fuss.  I had wiped the device clean and then it happened again but they couldn't see any logs.

    It was actually pretty painless.  I don't know why your store is giving you more grief.  You could try a different store.

    If it is a hardware issue, the only "help" we can provide is to advise you to take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

    Has basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide been tried?
