iPhone 5 battery draining very fast

    I've owned each iphone generation and never had to resort to turning features off just to get through a day of light use. I was out visiting the in-laws and never even used the phone (honest!) but battery life was dropping dramatically!

     

    I definitely think there is a problem either with some handsets, iOS6 or some built-in apps (or combination of!).

    i had exactly the same problem which was only cured by :

    erase the i phone

    then start from fresh.

    dont back up from previous phone

    now my phone has been on all day and only lost 12 %

    i tried evrything else, but this is the only way to solve the problem

    Just for info, mine was backed up from previous phone. If I erase and start from scratch do I then restore from back-up? Sorry if this is a silly question!

    no, you need to erase the phone and start up frpm scratch

    before you erase back up the phone

    then erase the phone

    then start it up like a new phone

    then you can connect to i tunes but dont restore from back up, put it as a new phone

    then manually add your content like apps and music etc.

    it solved the problem for me completely.

    ive been using my phone for 12 hours and its only used 17 %.

    before it was nearly draining completely after about 4 hours

    BUT it you do that you'll lose all your app data.  So any save games, progress, etc.

     

    I haven't done that cause I don't want to lose all my casual progress in Plants vs Zombies, Angry birds, GTA, and other games I've played on the last two generations of iPhones!

     

    APPLE YOU NEED TO ADDRESS THIS!  I'm getting quite fed up with this, at least acknowledge there is a problem!

    Finally have concrete numbers to show everyone after I REPLACED my iphone 5 yesterday afternoon.  Countless hours spent restoring (via backup AND as a new phone).....sim card replacement.....toggling every item on my phone on and off in a logical manner trying to pinpoint the cause.....

     

    Here's my numbers......

    I'd say my phone is running the way it should.   How did I do it?  Simple.  Received new phone from Apple.  NEVER plugged it into computer.  Set up as new phone on the iphone itself, using icloud ONLY TO SYNC and NOT USING ANY FORM OF BACKUP.  REPEAT: DO NOT USE ANY BACKUP.  Yes, I lost ALL of my app data and settings, ringtones, etc.  Does it suck?  Absolutely.  It's the only way for me to have a working phone.

     

    For anyone who didn't see (or don't care to go looking for) my former screenies, here's where I was for WELL over a week.....

    Posting this several places so everyone can see there is something seriously wrong.  Like Garybravo said....I can't tell if it's iOS 6 or a hardware problem.  I did the EXACT SAME thing to both phones,  one didn't work, and as you can see.....and one finally did. 

     

    Go get a replacement, don't waste your time (you can't buy anymore of it, it's a finite commodity).

    Ive noticed this too, but its only when i am using LTE often. Try to stay hooked up to WiFi whenever you can. Remember LTE in some places has as much as 50 mbps. I clocked it at 47 mbps yesterday, which must cause an increased drain from regular 4g or 3g...

    Plus, remember because the phone is new, you will probabaly be using it and messing around on it a little more often than your previous phone just from sheer excitement and new found interest

    go play a game like angry birds or bad piggies - I just did over lunch for 45 minutes - it used 45% of my battery!!!! - what a joke

    Since you got tour replacement phone yesterday afternoon, I have to assume that you have that battery performance at at one of the first charging cycles. Is this correct?

    The iPhone 5 was my first iPhone (therefore I have set it up as a new phone) but the first time that I have used it the battery was working for the max of 4 hours, never twelve!

     

    Are you sure that you get that time with a Brenda new iPhone with one day of life?

    This is EXACTLY why I can't rule out a hardware issue. 

     

    Did you EVER sync to a computer/itunes??  If so, I think that may have caused the issue.

     

    Yes....when I received my SECOND phone, the replacement, the first battery cycle is one I posted above. 

    Like I'm telling others, BRING YOUR PHONE BACK.  GET A NEW ONE. SET UP AS A NEW PHONE.  

     

    One more question, what carrier model did you buy?  Or is it an unlocked version?

    @handsfull thank you so much for your input! Can you just tell me if I am correct so far? When i get the new iphone...I turn it on...set it up... sign into my icloud account... have everything in my icloud turned on... and just plug the phone in as needed? i was going to power on the new phone, plug it in, let it charge to 100 and then drain it.  I should not do this?  I'm never plugging the new iphone into my computer. THATS for sure. Lol Let me know if I got it all correct.  Thank you soo much!

    It is an unlocked version bought directly from the apple store in Zurich. Actually right now I am able to use it for 10 hours (even if I am really sure that the usage counter is also counting when some background process are running and nobody is touching the phone) of usage.

     

    What sounds really strange to me is that the first cycle of my phone was really different from the one you have posted above, so I am wondering if I could get an improvement by replacing the phone.

     

    Anyway I am sure that I have not restored any backup from a previous phone because this is my first iPhone.

     

    The idea that I have so far is that:

     

    - there is some process which is waking up the phone when it is not touched and this is why the usage counter is giving wrong values. This can be easily proved by taking a screenshot of the usage before going to bed and checking it in the morning. You will see that the usage counter will be different in the morning.

     

    - the cellular data need to be disabled when there is a wifi connection available.it looks like that, even if the phone can be connected to the wifi, sometime (maybe when the phone is locked?) it uses the 3G/2g/lte data instead of the wifi.

    This is my experience so far...but I would really like to be sure that I don't have a defective battery because the difference between your first cycle and mine is really huge!

    Yes. Exactly like you wrote except the battery draining part. Lithium cells do not need to be condtioned and you can actually harm a lithium cell by draining it competely.

     

    Now go get fixed

    I've never setup iCloud, if I want to try this "setup as new" with a new phone, what all do I need to do with my current one and iCloud BEFORE I get a new phone?  Also what I need to do with iCloud after I've successful setup new phone.

    Here's a test I did over the weekend.  Phone actually lasted through sat and sun without needing a charge, but as you see in the pick I still didn't get much actual usage out of it.  I was busy most of the weekend.  I charged it while I slept Friday night, then took this pick right b4 I plugged it in to charge last night as I went to bed.  I did notice that Saturday night I slept for 8.5hrs, during which my battery dropped by 8%.  The only things I had off were Siri and Bluetooth, as I don't use them.  Also I would say most of the usage was on Wifi, about 95% of it.

    Your times are pretty good here..still had 24% after using it for over 5 hours and 24 min. If you get over 7 hours of usage plus all that time in standby, I would say that is pretty good for a phone. I still dont like the 8% while sleeping, unless you had a lot of notifications or something.

     

    My best times are 7 hours 54 min usage, 1 day 11 hours standby..Everything on, in a 2G area only for 11 hours of that time. That kills my battery searching for towers constantly.

     

    My sister in law has a LG Lucid (Android) and she cannot get more than 9 hours out of the phone regardless of standby/usage..Literally drops 10 percent driving to work with no WiFi/Navigation on..Verizon wont do anything for her besides stating "4G takes a lot of battery power". I already told her to drop that phone and get another one, but they keep giving her the run around.

     

    I still feel some issues with imessage dropping my percentange abnormally high.
