I am new to posting items on the forum, so please forgive me for any errors.  I have been trying to back up a 10 month old Mac Book Pro to a Seagate Backup Plus Portable External hard drive (1 GB) for the past 5 days.  After many restarts, it still is not working properly. It takes 12 hours or more to backup 20 GB out of 240 GB total.  Seagate help desk says it is Time Machine that is the issue. I have uninstalled all antivirus programs, tried shutting down all open programs, deleted WD Software (for a previous external hard drive that also had similiar issues), have verified and repaired permissions on both disks, and have made sure that the Seagate is erased, partitioned and set up as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - not case sensitive.  I have looked at the Console log to see what may be the problem and here is a sampling:

I don't know if this is the issue, but I went to Color Sync Utility and it showed two bad profiles:

Searching for profiles...

Checking 20 profiles...

/System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/Profiles/HD 709-A.icc

   Header message digest (MD5) is missing.

   The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

/System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/Profiles/SD 170M-A.icc

   Header message digest (MD5) is missing.

   The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

Repair done - 0 out of 2 profiles fixed.


 

Again, I have no idea if this is what is causing my TM problem, but I cannot figure out how to fix the bad profiles.

 

Can anyone help?

    Your signature says 10.7.5.  That is the problem.

     

    Either revert to 10.7.4 using TM

     

    or temporarily stop Spotlight to do a TM backup

     

    or Upgrade to Mountain Lion

     

    See the many many posts lower down the forum for how-to's.  Apple may apologise one day.

    I tried excluding my hard drive from spotlight, as in the instructions, but this did not help. I am into my 5th attempt at a completely clean backup, and am only at 7GB (out of 241) after 6 hours. It says it will take 7 days to complete.  I am hesitant to upgrade to ML, as I have seen many posts of people having similar problems with ML too, even when they did not have problems with Lion.  Any other ideas of what to try?

    To exclude your hard disk was not one of the three suggestions I posted.  I said stop spotlight. That requires a terminal sudo command . All you have done is make spotlight start a new index on your HD possibly making the situation worse.

    I can confirm that it is even worse now.  I was told to do this by an apple tech, in an attempt to stop Spotlight indexing.  I will try what you suggest and see what happens.

    Apple just released an update (apparently this past weekend Oct 5 2012) that solves the problem (the update mentions this problem with Time Machine specifically).

     

    Before applying the update, first-time Time Machine backup of my 10.7.5 MBP to an external USB portable drive was slated to take 53 days, despite formatting and reformatting the external drive a few times.  After the system update was applied, Time Machine performs correctly, and it looks like it'll be done in a few hours.

    I started my first TM backup the day before the update on Friday and it said it would take 14 days to backup 1tb via usb. Then I updated and resarted the TM and it initally said it would take 799 days!!! but then finished in about 15 hours. Big relief!

    The 10.7.5 Supplemental Update solves the TM back up and Spotlight issues.
