Q: Is anyone having memory leak issues with 64bit Windows 7 and iTunes?

iTunes runs for a period of time and then a dialog box appears. It takes longer if you let the program change tracks as in a playlist.  You can accelerate the process by picking a new song after they play for a while (double click).  Eventually, you get a dialog box that states - The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occured (-50).  Eventually, the program locks up.

How long of a "period of time" are we talking?

iTunes has always been a memory hog and never released memory correctly.

I've easily seen it hit 400+mb of memory on my system... generally I just close and relaunch it about once a week.

I've been having the same exact problem. -50 error, then memory usage up until it crashes. The iTunes UI becomes unresponsive, and it finishes the current song.

I'm watching it now and it's creeping up, so I'll take a picture when it hits the peak. It hit 750 MB the first time and 1000-something the second...

EDIT: I figured it out; I've been doing a lot of playlist creating and editing, and I noticed adding songs to and from stuff caused it to spike in usage. Just for kicks, I highlighted a playlist and cycled through all of them, and lo and behold it crashed.

Yea, at least for me when the commit size approaches 980,000Kb, iTunes becomes unresponsive. It will still function until the end of the song before i have to kill it.  I have been listening to it for over 2hrs with a commit size hovering around 450,000Kb - no issues.  If i start fiddling with switching songs, adding artwork, etc, i could get it to blow up in about 30min.  I have 4Gb RAM and a system managed swap file.   I also have the same issues on my desktop PC.  I do have a large music collection though.

-50 is internet connection issue. I don't see why it would cause any issues unless it is logging attempts to communicate but that would be small numbers like kb's. I haven't seen any problems with mine. Keep in mind there are other processes that are not "iytunes that run and communicate with itunes. Ypu may be seeing some of those communications occuring. Mine shows memory usage and cycles used even with itunes closed. Windows 7 pc AMD 4 core.

We shall see.  I am waiting for a Microsoft app debugger and will get to the bottom of this.  I don't think it's an internet connection because both my laptop and desktop have exactly the same issue - one is wireless and the other is wired.  They do have 2 things in common though, an AirPort Extreme and a cable modem.  Anyone else want to chime in on what you are using?  Maybe we can localize this?

This has been going on continuously for me.  Primarily, I'm trying to clean up my library.  I can watch the memory climb from ~120 MB or so when I start it to over 750 MB when it crashes.  Merely selecting songs in my playlist causes memory usage to increase, and it never goes back down.  Very irritating when you have a lot of stuff to do.  Makes a long job interminable.

I have the same problem where it warns me that there is not enough memory to save the library - then freeze/crash.

For what it's worth I've only noticed it since 1) I bought/added about 30 songs in the last week and 2) since the last "update" (and I use that word loosely! )

It scares me because I am afraid I WILL lose it all!

PS: I only have about 300 songs and no videos. Just audio so it's hardly overwhelmed!

I am having the same issue. Everytime I click on a song, Genius loads the iTunes sidebar with suggestions. The memory used by these suggestions never gets recycled after selecting another song. It stock piles up after each selection. My itunes uses around 4-5 mbs of memory for every genius sidebar list it loads. I can use the down arrow on my keyboard and crash itunes in 5 minutes or less. It fails around 900mbs memory used.

One thing that you can try that i read was disable the iTunesHelper.exe program either by the msconfig program or just disable the service.  Appearently this can cause a similar issue.  All this program does is open iTunes when you connect your iPod to your USB port.  I am wondering what 64bit patches you guys are on?  Maybe if you list them we can figure out if some Microsoft patch is causing this issue, a circumstance, or bad programming from Apple.  I will review my system and list my patches tomorrow.  I dont remember this always happening, nor do I remember it only happening after an upgrade to the iTunes.exe or iTunes files.  Sometimes, things seems a certain way until you really find out their root cause.  I am still trying to find some time to finish debugging the application.  I didnt realize how big the symbols directory was for Microsoft.  I am finding myself juggling disk space since i am using a laptop.

Whether or not this is true, who knows.  I would think that Apple would address this if it was true.

I am also having this issue, and have been for a couple of months now. iTunes will be fine for awhile until it eventually reaches about 930k memory usage and freezes up. This happens mutliple times throughout the day. Really annoying because sometimes it will undo changes you made right before it crashed, like adding songs to a playlist or changing information on an artist/song.

I purchased a new hard drive and essentailly started over (i did save my music library).  I reinstalled 64bit 10.7.0.21 and my issue has slightly changed.  I have found that now at reaching the threshold 1GB of Private Working Memory, itunes completely hangs.  I have found out though that if i get rid of (hide) the iTunes sidebar, this does not happen and my RAM stays less than 400MB, essentially solving my problem with a workaround.  Hopefully, iTunes will address this at some point in the future.

    Best of Luck All...

iTunes 11 seems to have solved all the memory leak problems on Windows 7.
