Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
1. Install iTunes 10.6.3 > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
2. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE to buy Snow Leopard. Make a backup, insert the disc and upgrade. Then, open > Software Update to update to the most recent version. Open App Store and purchase OS X Mountain Lion. See if your programs are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

I have the same problem as I am currently running 10.5.8 and now need to update it for my new iPhone 5.
My Software Update isn't showing me any updates so thats why I've looked for help on here. I've followed your steps on your answer above and I've downloaded iTunes 10.6.3 but now I can't find Snow Leopard. Do I really have to buy it on disc? Is it not available? So does this mean I will then also have to buy Mountain Lion so I'll have to pay twice for updates?

iTunes 10.6.3 must support the iPhone 5. If you can't sync the phone, upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Call Apple to buy Snow Leopard. You can keep Snow Leopard

Thank you for your reply. When I plug the iphone 5 in it says that it needs iTunes 10.7 or later. Can't you download Snow Leopard so that I don't have to wait for a disc to arrive?

Snow Leopard is only available in a disc

I'm in the same situation, luckily I went on craigslist and a man with the unlimited client snow leopard edition in my neighborhood is letting me use his disc for $10.
If you use SPOTIFY, you can sync your music on your computer to your iPhone 5 over wi-fi. I was able to get all 25GB of music from my mac to my new phone. Now I'm just waiting to install snow leopard so I can copy my apps and ringtones.

I am having the same problem.
- Currently running MAC OSX 10.58 with ITUNES 10.68
- iPhone 5
- Trying to connect iPhone5 with ITunes, but cannot because my itunes and operating systems are not updated
Is it possible just to skip the snow leopard update and just jump to snow lion update?
Thanks for your help.

You can't skip to Mountain Lion you must first upgrade to Snow Leopard and that will allow you to purchase the app for Lion from your computer. It really is not that much for both. I believe it will be 40 bucks plus tax.
