Q: How do I export iPhone contacts?

My goal is to make a back up of my iPhone contacts, preferably in a printed list.

I figured the way to do that would be to somehow merge my phone contacts into my Google Contacts on my MacBook (however, I do not want to merge my Gmail Contacts into my phone, as there are 100s of contacts there I do not want/need on my phone, so I am proceeding cautiously).

Under Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar >iCloud  I have Contacts "On" (but have not done an iCloud backup FWIW because I am not sure my data is less than 5gb). Doing this alone does not help.

Can anyone advise me of the best way to achieve this goal without making a big mess?

Thanks in advance.

You should be syncnig your contact to your cmptuer regularly.  It is a bad idea to have your contact in only one place.

All of your contacts should be on your computer and should be included in your regular backup copy of your computer.

You could use the free app My Contacts Backup, which has the option to export your iPhone contacts as a csv (Excel) file which can then be printed.  It also will backup to a vcf file, which can be imported to another iOS device or mac Address Book.

I used a standalone app to sync iPhone contacts directly with my Windows Contacts, which essentially provided a direct way to place the contacts on my PC and keep them as backup.

    randers4,

It worked like a champ. That app helped out loads after my iTunes not fully syncing all my contacts...Cheers!

It seems that your goal is more to export your contacts to a list rather than sync them to your PC.

After hours of not syncing my Iphone contacts to my new gmail account despite the Calender and everything else working find via Exhange, I downloaded the "My contact backup" app and it worked great for me. Just download the app, hit backup, the hit email and enter your gmail address, wait five minutes for the email to arrive, then click import (just click it once, there is a delay, I ended up with four copies but thankfully gmail has a merge addresses function...).

It doesn't work for me. Emails aren't included in the  csv file. I've clicked and unclicked all the export configuration fields. Sent an email to the My Contacts Backup support people but haven't heard back. Anybody know how to fix this. I bought the Pro version but that didn't help either.

When you connect your iPhone, iTunes opens and there should be a tab which lets you select a program to 'backup' your contacts to (i.e. Windows Contacts or Address Book).
Just select one, and then click on sync and it will backup your contacts to the PC.

    Exporting Contacts to Gmail

A quick and simple way to have a backup of your contacts on the web is to export them to Gmail. For that, you can use iTunes. Select "Info," "Sync Contacts With," “Google Contacts.” After you click “Configure,” add your Google username and password and click "Apply," your contacts are exported directly to your Gmail account.

I used iPhone Contacts Backup to download my iPhone contacts directly to my PC and store them for backup.  I have an older iPhone 3G and unfortunately could not use the iCloud as a method for backup.

You mean you want to backup your contacts from your iPhone to your computer, right? I like using iPubsoft to make backup files or extract them! The tools you can use include iPubsoft iPhone to Computer Transfer or iPubsoft iPhone Backp Extractor, they both have this function, and can help you extract your backup file easily if you want to backup/export iPhone contacts to computer!
