Once I delete a photo from my photostream on my MacBook Pro, it deletes from the photostream on my iphone just fine. But it WON'T delete the photo from the Photo library on my Mac or the Camera Roll on my iphone? I swear when I deleted a photo from the photo stream it used to tell me, "Photo will be deleted from all devices" or something like that. It's really annoying to have to go through and manually delete my photos 3 times over (once from my photostream, then my photo library, then my camera roll) Is there anything I can do to fix/help this?

I swear when I deleted a photo from the photo stream it used to tell me, "Photo will be deleted from all devices"

this means, it will be deleted from the Photo stream on all devices, but not from the camera roll, if you imported it there.

PhotoStream, CameraRoll, and iPhoto Library have different purposes, and so it is very good, that removing an image from one place will not delete it from all others, even if you do not like it .

    • The Photo stream is used to share and photos, it is a transient storage for a limited time. You place photos tere to be picked up and imported on other devices. If you delete an image from the photo stream you are no longer sharing it, but why should that action delete the image from all devices that importd it?
    • Your camera roll is the set of all images that you want to keep on each device. The size of the available storage might be different; so why would you want to have an image deleted from all devices, if you delete it from one?
    • Photos tat you sync from your iPhoto Library (on your mac) should be removed automatically from all synced devices, if you sync again.

    Hi Leonie --

I just came across your post and hoped you could make a clarification. You say "Your camera roll is the set of all images that you want to keep on each device". However I see photos in my iPhone photo libraries that I don't see in my Camera Roll. Is the Camera Roll only for true photos, i,e. images taken with the device's camera, or should it include other stuff, for example images from photo albums created externally and synched to the device via iTunes?

And similarly, if the Camera Roll contains all the images on the device, what is in the "Photo Library" item?

the camera roll album contains a special selection of photos - it is the central album of photos to be shared between apps on your mobile device. All photos added to the camera roll will be backed up in iCloud, if you enable iCloud backup, and photos shared to the camera roll will be added to "My Photo Stream". Camera roll album photos can be imported back to your mac, when you connect the device.

    By default

all photos taken with the device will appear in the camera roll album

also photos saved from an email, text message, webpage, or screenshot

but not photos synced to your device using iTunes photo sync.

You can use iPhoto to save and share edited versions of your synced photos to the camera roll.
