Necessary, probably not. All I wanted was a little information. I know what the problem is - I'm not trying to waste anyone's time diagnosing an issue I'm already fully aware of. I've spent months reading, researching, testing and learning - trying to get to the bottom of it. I've replaced everything that may be causing it, I've run all the solutions and fixes found on the forum to help diagnose.

I understand just what's causing it, why it happens, and what to do to avoid it. Thankfully I've gone from video card induced KP storms of 12 reboots in a row (largely by reading these discussions) down to 2-3 a week. These 2-3 a week are still causing issues, and despite my best efforts - it still hasn't been entirely alleviated.

So yes, I'm frustrated by my video card decisions randomly rebooting my Mac, and was wondering if there's any news from Apple on the matter other than 'we're looking into it' 2 years ago. All I did to inherit this issue was upgrade my OS (then everything else to try and fix it), and it would seem - because this has been an ongoing issue - that there would be an upcoming resolution.

I hope some level of the frustration here is at least understandable, deadlines don't change based on "my Mac ate my homework" - if the result I was after was an OS that threw a temper tantrum every time it was challenge - I'd still be building PCs.

Sorry I got pissy... But I really didn't want to waste anyone's time on this. I wasn't aware that Apple doesn't chime in occasion to try and help.

    mad531,

I've got the same exact problem and the best solution so far has been to downgrade.  I really don't need the new features in Mountain Lion and was only upgrading to get the latest version of Safari.  Now here I am back on Snow Leopard (the problem persisted in Lion), but at least I'm not crashing.  I still do get the openGL panics on occasion when running 3D intensive applications, but only when I forget to switch to discrete mode before opening them.  I really hope Apple/nVidia get to the bottom of this soon.

I had a problem for about a year or so where my screen would flicker. Apple told me they would have a fix, but months and months went by.  Many people had their logic boards replaced to no avail and some even got brand new Macbook Pros after 2-3 logic board replacements.  Finally, earlier this year Apple released an EFI update that once and for all fixed it.  Now here we are again with another, more fatal, problem.  I really hope it doesn't take another year for Apple to get it fixed, but at least there is hope that they will fix it.

holy my ****, what the beautiful font!

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: cider

cider is not a stability king. And games stress hardware badly.

question is basically in changed thermal throttling in nVidia GPU/drivers combo.

MacOs nVidia drivers are purely nVidia thing, Apple just include them in package.

Try go nVidia - there are Mac drivers page - and look for something new.

Not to question your advise but wondering how going to nVidia for something new when my macbook just has the HD3000 graphics?

as for the font, copied and pasted from notes lol been starting to keep record

that was for people with nvrm or nvda crash

haven't seen your crash log - so don't know.

You have no added kernel extensions, so these problems should belong to the Mac OS X kernel.

Cider is a bit of a hack, but problems in cider should cause a crash in cider, not take out the entire machine as this did.

Your second panic log, only 12 minutes later is more interesting to me. It is in the panic reporting routine, which should never crash.

Problems in multiple divergent areas may be caused by multiple different problems, or BOTH may be caused by a memory problem.

Overnight memory testing may be prudent.

Did a mem test, kernel panic and rebooted, ordered new ram and a hybrid hdd time to upgrade a bit. hopefully solves my issues.  Thanks

Sadly I am in complete agreement.....done it all, checked it all...so have the Genius bar...no hardware faults...lost an incredible amount of time re-installing, rebuilding...to no avail....

    alajang-

I am sorry you are having trouble.

This is a User-to-User forum. Apple makes no promise of reading these posts, and NEVER replies here.

Your post includes no hard information, and does not even tell what Mac or what Mac OS X you are using.

if you would like Readers to help you, please post more particulars and description of what errors you are encountering, or some panic logs.

This thread already has over 100 entries, and at least five different problems are suspected. Saying, "Me, too!" to five different problems is not meaningful.

I had the Black Screen - Kernal Panics on my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro.

Apple Service bulletin regarding MacBook NVIDIA Hardware problems is here:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

** Please note that Apple has extended the Warranty for THREE ADDITIONAL YEARS on the Mid 2010 Macbook Pro for the NVideo GPU "wiggling loose" from the Logic Board. The systems are sporadic.

    Long Story Short:

I setup a Genius Appointment, and he ran a Video Test.  It Passed!?!!

He said, " Don't worry...we'll replace your Logic Board for free anyway!!"

Parts and labor would have been around $560.  Yikes!

It took 5 days to order the part. (e-mailed notice to bring in my laptop)

It took 2 days to install the part.  So I was only out a laptop for 2 days.

Well, it's been 3 days, and NO Kernel Panics!

I think it is now fixed!  I wish I had read this forum earlier.

It's worth making an appointment, and getting it looked at!!

I was very satisfied with the staff at Apple in the Tampa International Plaza!

And pleased that Apple stood by their hardware by extending the warrenty!

    Nice work.

You dont by any chance have something called simplifile installed? From what I can gather its whats hooking up your machine at every KP and doesnt like your gfx card driver. If not then im out with this one.
