Q: iCloud and Email Addresses

Under Settings, in iCloud, Account, Advanced, Allowing Sending From I have two email addresses - my @me.com address and @ icloud.com address. The @icloud.com just appeared out of nowhere. When I turn it on I get a message on my phone that someone else is using it and can use my Facetime. What is going on and how can I fix it? For now I have it turned off and using only my @me.com address. Also, how long will I be able to continue using my @me.com address?

@icloud.com addresses are being added to existing iCloud accounts as an alternate email address.  This is just being phased in now and may not be fully functional for all users yet.  Your @me.com address will continue to work.  According to this documentation, an email will be sent "in a few weeks" when the process is complete: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5441 (send paragraph).  Some users report that their account works now; others (like me) haven't even received it yet.

What the heck is Apple thinking??

They just switched from @mac.com addresses to @me.com and now switching to @icloud.com. What will it be in a year from now?

They still do not allow merging ID''s. The crazy thing is I'm forced to use an old email address from their competition to sign into my itunes account. One of the most ridiculous situations and least thought out things Apple has ever done. When I gift music to someone, guess what, it comes from their competitions email address.

Can I just continue to use my @me.com address or will I be forced to switch? There's a lot of work involved with various accounts to switch not to mention the work it creates for others to change.

Did you read the linked article?  It clearly says:

Do I get to keep my @me.com or @mac.com email address?

Yes. You can continue to use your current @me.com or @mac.com email address for as long as you like.

If you don't want to use the @icloud address, don't use it.
