I don't pretend to be technically capable of commenting intelligently on tower issues.   I can say that during my typical work day, I spend 40% in LTE coverage and the rest in 3G coverage.   I also am attached to wifi at work and at home, using cellular only when commuting or when I'm out and about.   I set the phone up with everything on that I use, or might use.   Since I bought the phone for its feature set, I refuse to shut stuff off to save battery.

I may be extremely lucky, but I doubt it.   Like I said earlier, the 4s had the same battery issues and I did the restore as new a year ago, when I got that.   This may be a reason that I was able to restore from backup this time, with no issues.   I'm not a heavy user, but do use it in spurts heavily.   Right now it's still at 100%, 41min usage and 3:55 standby.

    jameson,

I don't think this is the case for me because I have a very simple setup. For example I run minimal icloud, and location services and don't push or fetch email. It almost seems as if the cell towers in my area have improved or my phone has improved. Do the carriers rebalance their systems? Is there some type of dynamic response that enables towers to better communicate with the customers? Could the effect you are talking about have to do with the interaction with the cell provider and not the phone itself?

The only thing I can say is, if you have problems.. you'll continue to have battery problems....

if you don't have battery problems, you will have battery problems..

all these fixes seem to be temporary at best.

Day to day I see random improvements/declines in performance..

once day i'll get 6 hours 40 minutes of usage, next day I'll get 3 hours of usage...yet i do nothing differently..

it almost even seems the less I do on my phone the worse it gets.

Maybe on motor vehicles.....but there isn't an OS 'break in period'....

I really believe most people has this problem and don't even know it. I've met with 2 more of my friends Yesterday who have iPhone 5's.  Their battery life is also very bad (getting less than 12 hours total runtime, with less than 2.5 hours of use), but the they don't think so.....because they don't know better.  They think this is the standard.

I think there is a hardware failure on the iPhone 5.  I think it affects nearly all phones. Jameson's stats are the ONLY stats I've seen that are actually impressive, and I've been scouring the net for info since I've tackled this problem about 2 weeks ago now.  I think the hardware failure causes an exacerbated effect on ATT models, but also affects Verizon/sprint models (again, not to the extent that it does on the ATT models).   Disagree with me?  It's ok, I may be wrong....but I maybe right. We'll see.  One thing we DO KNOW is a fact:  the iPhone 4's antenna was bad and apple never fixed the problem for those who purchased the phone.  No, a 'fix' is not giving a bumper away, a 'fix' is taking it apart and replacing the defective part with a functional part.

I'm not suggesting it's a "break-in period", but more of a setup process.......   Again, no real evidence, other than my end result.

    BY THE WAY

What does it say to all you guys, that we are now on page 82 of this thread, but this is getting almost zero coverage in regular outside media?  Does that mean we are an incredibly small minority of iPhone 5 users.  These things sold like crazy!

(Don't get all conspiratorial about this.  I work in the real media).

Page 82, but it's not like there are thousands of different people in this discussion.   MAYBE, it's not as widespread as we might think?

And that is what worries me.  This will not get addressed until it bursts out into the real world.  Like "scratch-gate"

Jameson I'm so sorry if you've said this before (and I know you don't think it matters) but I'm just genuinely curious- how did you set up your phone out of the box? Restore? New? Battery drain? Etc.. Thanks!

    Batterygate!

That the people on this forum are ADD

People will always wonder why things are not better.  I already predict the next iphone will have camera, battery and speed issues.  Not to mention imperfections on the case.

I too see the battery drain faster but like another user said - the more you use it the better off it seems to be.  If you turn wake it up a lot, it seems to drain the battery faster.

Also, people are not comparing their usage very well.  No one knows specifically how another person has it set up - people just post screen shots, but there are so many factors involved to be spot on.

Just my 2 cents - use the product as you would and if you are not happy - return it or set up an appt.  Mark

Set up an appt and get it worked out.  No reason to dwell over these issues.  Just my 2 cents

I had a 4s and went through the same battery issues with that, a year ago.  I did a restore as new with that a year ago.  When I got my i5, I did a backup of my 4s, connected to itunes via my macbook and then did a restore from backup to my new i5.  For the first day and a half I had Terrible battery life.  I didn't have time to be doing battle with the phone so I just used it and charged it as needed.  By day 3 it was visibly better and has been better than My 4s ever was.

    Mine is a black 64gb AT&T model.

I also did the same with my wife.   Same model except white. I have not followed her performance as closely but it also appears to be operating fine.

Not everyone that comes here with the same issue will post their complaint. Lets say a crazy number and 5% of the 90,000 page views are new viewers with the same problem thats still 4,500 people PLUS the few people that I know that are having the same issue dont even know an apple forum exists or choose othe avenues to solve their problem. Then count all the people that just dont care and just accept their fate (I'm sorry but I dont like to just settle for second best). I think its more widespread than we think...

On topic I'm pretty sure its something with cellular , switching radios 4G/LTE/Wifi and the phone doesnt know which is stronger. Just a hunch I was sure it was hardware after handsfull posted back with his new device but its obv not the case. Other than people with obvious hardware defects I'm 99.9% sure its a software issue.

Thanks for all the posts its been very informative to follow.
