You could try trashing Motion preferences, but I doubt it will help since the program is freezing. I would suggest a reinstall from the App store. If still no sucess try a new user. Does the freeze only happen with emitters?

I have an iMac quad core I7 and I always use full resolution and normal quality without any problems with text. Emitters and replicators cause major slowdowns in playback fps, but not in creation. Your macpro retina should perform well with keyframing text objects. What I have found helpful with complex objects like replicators/emitters is to put them in separate groups and turn off other groups/objects when you work with them or turn off the complicated effects groups to work with other objects. Then I can achieve decent playback.

Did you ever find a solution for this problem? I just bought Motion today and am having the same issue on my 2.6 GHz retina Macbook Pro.
