Q: icloud.com email being returned

My email that is being sent to me at my icloud account is being returned with the message 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias.

My email use to end with @me.com but when I went into settings on my phone there is an email account with the icloud.com address.  When I write an email it uses the icloud.com address.  How can I turn it off or fix it so emails that I send and are responded to are delivered instead of being rejected.

iPhone 4, iOS 6

Apple is in the process of changing the email domain to @icloud.com.  Currently I have @me, @mac and @icloud as equivalent addresses, but I don't know if the plan is to phase out @me and @mac addresses or just keep them as aliases.  You're the first user to report that you @me address no longer seems to be working.  It all seems to be a mystery right now.

@icloud.com addresses are being rolled out over an unspecified period: you will get one without having to do anything, and it will be additional to your @me.com address which will continue to work as normal. You will get a notification email when your account is updated. Please see this page:

What appears to have happened is that the iPhone's software is prioritising the @icloud.com address but your account has not yet been activated to use it (which shouldn't happen of course). You should find that messages to your @me.com address will work, and you need to use that as the 'From' address until the @icloud.com address actually works. However any new aliases you create will be @icloud.com only.

Thank you Roger for your help.  I appreciate it the explanation.  I have gone into my phone and made my @me.com the priority email address and sent myself a message and it worked.
