LASERCAT Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Hi. I'm a longtime Apple products user, but relatively new here in the Community.  On October 6, I was given credit by a member for a "Problem Solved."  He had been having a problem regarding his Apple TV along with programming his Harmony One remote control.  I was happy to help.  Unless I'm missing something, I should now be seeing 10 "Reputation Points" alongside my user name and on my Member Profile as well, I assume.  It is now 5 days later and it still days "0 Points."  Why don't I see the points I've earned?  Thanks for helping!

Can you link to the discussion where you earned the points?

That was in this topic where the OP awarded h/hself the 10 points instead of LASERCAT.

@LASERCAT - Sorry, but this kind of thing happens all the time. Keep at it and you will earn your points (and maybe even get some by accident, too ) . On the bright side, at least you got a 'thank you,' which doesn't always happen, either.

Just to avoid any possible confusion here, you can mark one of your own posts in a discussion you started as helpful or solved, but you do not get any points for it.

Writing a post to yourself (preferably with the solution) and marking it as solved is also a useful way to indicate that a subject is now resolved.

Yes, but wouldn't it have been just as useful to indicate that the problem was resolved, by giving the proper credit (and points) to the problem-solver (in this case, me!)?  I don't regret helping, but that was the first time that I had actively participated in that way on the boards. I'm just disappointed that I'm still looking at a "0" score, due to someone else's oversight. Oh well.

That, unfortunately, is how it works; quite often the original poster doesn't say anything - they may not be familiar with the system; or they accidentally hit the wrong button; or they'll thank you profusely, but don't always award points. There are lots of possibilities. One thing is certain though: asking for points, even in a very indirect way, is not looked upon favorably here (because it violates the rules), so your post may be removed or edited with an explanatory email from Apple. I had one removed a long time ago and have since avoided any and all references to the points system unless someone asks about how it works.

Keep helping people and the points will follow!

OK. Thanks, babowa, for the heads up on that. I hope my post isn't interpreted that way. As a new poster, I was just trying to get a handle on the ground rules.  I'm sure I'll have many more opportunities in the future. And I really do appreciate your comment.

No, you're fine - you had a question about it and there is nothing wrong with that; I was referring to posts such as "if this post helped solve your problem, make sure you mark it as such" or "don't forget to mark posts as solved or helpful", "hope this helps", etc.

    Good point Babowa,

I must admit to the occasional 'hope this helps' but never really thought about what motivated the comment.   I think it was more to remind newcomers of the system but even that, on reflection, is a step too far.   I know you weren't aiming at anyone in particular but I, for one, won't do it again.

Well, I judiciously avoid any mention now because, when I got mine yanked, it was under the previous system where marking a post solved or helpful did not automatically result in points - points were a totally separate matter. So, even if you indicated that your question was solved, there might be absolutely no points awarded to anyone.

It was under that system where I posted something like "it will help others looking for solutions if you were to mark your question as solved" (don't remember the exact wording), and it wasn't very long before it was gone and I got the requisite email. So, with the current system, where clicking on solved or helpful does award points, I don't want to get another email, LOL. Besides, I enjoy sharing what I've learned - a thank you means a lot more to me!

Don't worry, it'll even out a little bit over time. You may get no thanks whatsoever for a long thought-out, detailed answer, but then you'll find yourself rewarded with the solved mark for saying "I don't understand any of that, can you rephrase your question?"

    Human beings are nuts.

    Lasercat --

You've gotten great encouragement here.  I just wanted to add mine.  If you visit these boards often, you'll get a sense of who's in it for the stars, and who's here just to help.  The Hosts here have dedicated a great deal of time trying to figure out how best to encourage people who are helped here, to actually assign thank-you ratings.

It's kind of mind-boggling, because lots of the questions asked here are first time posters . . . they land here via the main Apple page.  They ask a question, and lots of times get great help.  But they never respond.  Or, if we're lucky, they say, "Boy, thanks SO much!!!! That solved my problem!!!"  But they on't click any Helpfuls or Solved.

I came here in 2003, after thoroughly anhiliating my new Mac.  It was 10.2, and I was used to 8.6.  So, of course, I immediately cleaned out fonts I thought I didn't need. The great people here had me back in business in no time. So, I've been giving back, ever since.  Don't get discouraged.  All kindnesses will come back to you 100-fold.
