I've been using Apple devices for about 28 years. The issue I have is not so much about access to YouTube, but more about Apple removing an application from my device. In 28 years, this is the first time it's happened. I have to enter my password to download apps, I paid for my device, and I pay monthly for access to the Internet. At which of those points does apple become the manager of my device content? I've had apps stop working in the past with an updated os; and then it is my job to remove or ignore them. Obviously, it's not in the consumer's best interest for apple to go to war with google. I realize YouTube was a preinstalled app, however, many of us relied on it for delivering content in a user friendly, familiar way.

Apple's contract with Google to provide the Google Maps and YouTube apps expired. Given the current status of relations between Google and Apple there was no way it would be extended by either side. Apple could not legally continue to include it with iOS 6. It is their job to remove it since they don't have a contract to include it, not yours.

Google has already released a YouTube app for the iPhone and are reportedly working on a Google Maps and iPad YouTube app. You will be able to download those and decide whether to use them.

My 10 year old son also has autism, and youtube was how he wound down after a day at school and several additional hours of tutoring.  I'm lucky that we have two iPads, as we got him a new one so his speech therapist could record some of his sessions.  We won't upgrade the old iPad (which his sister inherited) until Google comes out with their iPad version of youtube.  Trying to teach him to go to Safari, go to bookmarks, and try to type in something he wants to see - that's too many steps for him.  It's frustrating when technology takes steps backwards - we're so used to the ease of what we have, but changes like this for special needs kids/adults - it's much harder for them to adjust.

Don't despair. There are other ways.

Download Jasmine from the App Store for your YouTube needs.

After one day of using TubeBox (not free unfortunately) I'm happy with it as an alternative to the YouTube app. It recognises my YouTube account and lists new videos from my subscribed contributors. In fact it goes one better than the YouTube app because it will download the videos for watching when I choose. In recent weeks my broadband connection has been so slow it's taken over 10 minutes to watch a 5 minute clip. This morning it was a delight to watch something without a single pause or hiccup.

It's apparent you are dedicated to the care of your son. As such it behooves you do some research about updates that are released before applying them. In the case of the YouTube app it was well known that it would not be included in iOS 6. Learn from this and don't apply any future updates until you understand what impact it may have on your son. Any issues and criticisms will appear in these forums almost instantly.

Hope this helps, I have a high functioning kiddo, but know where you are coming from.  Here it goes:

    Go to App Store

    Search You Tube

Click IPhone Apps (on top) (It'll work with IPads too 8).  )

Click the free You Tube app

    Install

    Have a nice day.

Thanks for the tube box recommendation it's brilliant and a much easier set up for my son to use and the fact you can use it offline too is a bonus. To all the parents who have posted on here with similar problems to the one I had should take a look :-) well worth the £1.50.

    Thanks again.

Glad to be of help. I have a colleague with an autistic son so I know how devastating changes of routine can be. No doubt there are other alternative apps out there but so far I'm happy enough with TubeBox not to need to search elsewhere.

It will not come back, Apple no longer has a contract with Google to include the app. And it takes two sides to come to an agreement.

So just to be clear: Apple has offended all its users, beyond the normal, "we hate our customers" mantra at the Apple Store? Apple hates its customers almost as much as Axl hates his fans.

Why are you apologizing for Apple?  They (Apple and Google) diminished the iPad user experience with this change and the onus should not be on the user to figure it out.  Don't get me started on the new Apple Maps app...sigh
