How can it be a problem with ONE Mail client and no others. That tells me it is the Mail client that is at fault.

You installed thunderbird on the same Mac and had no problems, right. then how can it be an AT&T or Yahoo problem.

That is suggestive, but it is not probative that Mail is doing something wrong. Mail interoperability hasn't been that cut and dried since the day the second email software suite was written.

You ask "how can it be an AT&T or Yahoo problem." It could be merely being stricter about an aspect of mail standards to which AT&T/Yahoo servers are not quite adhering, or they could each be interpreting the interoperability standards slightly differently in an ambiguous area, or the servers could have different code paths for different clients and have a bug in the servers' code path for Mail.

They might even be operating to different versions of the applicable standards. [humor]As they say, "Standards are wonderful things; that's why there are so many of them."[/humor]

Very simple.  Nothing has changed on Mac mail, no updates on the systems and have been operating perfectly for months.  In another topic started by someone else, ALL the Macs in their office stopped working as of last Tuesday around 2:00.

Since nothing has changed with  these computers, that means something changed with the server authentication.  If Mac mail is compliant with everyone elses mail (I tested), used to work on AT&T and now doesn't, it's pretty clear where the problem is.

    @mwearl,

So based on your contact with AT&T do you believe AT&T will actually resolve this issue? Based on my contact with Apple and the escalation of the issue to their Senior Engineers they found that it IS a server issue on AT&T's end, which supports what you're stating here.

How were you able to escalate your issue with them? I usually hit dead ends with them and get frustrated speaking to their tech support, if you can call it that.

I might try escalating my concerns as well to put more pressure on them. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for your post.

I'm not confident that AT&T will resolve the issue; they certainly didn't do it in the first 24 hours.  As far as escalation goes, it was pure chance that the tech I spoke with actually contacted the correct engineers on his end that were able to reproduce the problem, so they escalated it.

The only way I've ever been able to get anything escalated with my local Bell/AT&T is contacting my state utilities commission.

I can't believe it takes them this long to resolve an issue affecting so many people.  We are but a small sample of people who even thought to call or visit these forums.

Thank you mwearl for posting that it was a confimred  AT&T problem.  I have had this same experience but can't remember when it started but it has been recently.  I've tried all different settings listed on this site, checked ATT sites to no avail.  Gmail connects but not Macmail.  Strange thing as I posted on this site to no responses is if I have my non connected macmail open, sign on to Yahoo via the internet, sign into Yahoo mail using the same email address and the same password BANG...macmail connects.  And that tells me there was some correlation between macmail and yahoo servers. I did not try to call AT&T as I know how that would've gone even if I were to find the correct number to call.  I'm glad you did.

Funny thing, I came home from work tonight expecting to see the locks next to my macmail mail boxed and they were not there and I had received some mail dated with today's date.  Hopefully AT&T corrected to problem....Hopefully.

    Thanks again,

I spoke to 2 different AT&T rep's and 1 Tier 2 tech support agent who was basically useless and said there are no known SMTP issues and again pointed me back to Apple. We tried the usual resetting password, changing it, re-entering POP/SMTP settings all of which did nothing.

AT&T does have no problem directing me to their one time $50 paid tech support department who wouldn't even consider waiving the fee and couldn't even guarantee that the problem would resolve.

I'm using Thunderbird now reluctantly, which works just fine. Hopefully Mail will reolve itself on its own soon.

Well...I've got more news now.  Macmail /ATT/Yahoo/Pacbell started to work as I posted in the above posting and worked fine all on its own without me signing into Yahoo mail via the internet.  It's worked with incoming and outgoing for a good 24 hours and BANG....suddenly the locks re-appeared out of the blue and now I'm back to square one.  There were no adjustments made on my side before it stopped working or during the brief 24 working period.  Just blam it started to work and blam it stopped working.  Weird,,,, Who really knows if it's Macmail or AT&T?  but there is a glitch somewhere for sure.

Get a free email account (Google etc) use it alongside the ATT, see which one works consistently.

I have one, hardly ever used but it has never had the lock or reported any server connection issues.  AT&T account was locked again this morning but as soon as I signed in to mail at Yahoo.com the macmail accounts unlocked.  The Gmail account is an IMAP (don't really know if that makes a difference refarding the POP account problems).

    Thanks

Then your question is answered, get rid of ATT.

I would rather have it start working consistenly as I've had that email address for years and family and friends and any business dealings including registrations are with that address. It is an option though.  I wonder if everyone who is having this frustrating problem will dump their AT&T mail account because of it.

Most (including me) did that a long time ago, if you're going to keep ATT you're going to have to live with their lousy service. Why not forward (from the ATT website) all the mail to your other address (hopefully it's an Imap account and not another POP) and receive the mail there.

Suppose so possibly.  This is the first time I've ever had an issue with AT&T since we've had computers.  Never had a problem with PC's and never a problem since switching to Mac several years ago until recently.  I'm not bragging on AT&T but we've got mostly everything bundled with them..phone, internet, U-Verse TV.  I guess since something has been working for a long time and suddenly stops working to the degree it did it's a challange to get it back not to mention puzzling.

I have no such problems with the Bellsouth/AT&T/Yahoo emails I have on either Mac ML or Windows XP & 7.

I have 3 BS/ATT/Yahoo accounts. But then I don't use Mac Mail on the Mac.
