i had an external backup from a macbook pro 10.5 snow leopard and it was about 1.5 years ago, only about half year backup, and now a new desktop mac with mountain lion 10.8

can the old backup be used or can it be deleted to allow fresh backup on this machine?

If the iMac has got a different name that the MacBook Pro had, you have to erase the Time Machine backup if you don't want to restore it to the iMac. Open Disk Utility, select the Time Machine disk and erase the disk. Finally, go to System Preferences > Time Machine and set up Time Machine
