After posting the above reply I've found a link suggesting "Resetting of the SyncServer folder", with a reference to the following link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627
I've followed the isnstructions on this link for the "OS X Mountain Lion" and it seems to have solved the problem (hopefully - haven't got the annoyingmessage since).

Thanks for that, I have done it and now wait and see what happens. You would think Apple would know about this and sort it. There are a lot of people having the same problem.
Now every time we link with another machine we will have to do this, so I am saving that page for the future, if it has worked that is!
