Without Aperture the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager

Rather than "merge", you could export the photos that you want from the old library to a folder somewhere, then switch back to your current library and import those photos.
But that only gives you the photos - not the "faces", keywords, albums, ratings, etc. All the organization will be gone. It's like starting from the camera again.

Many thanks TD... I have now downloaded IPL (and PowerTunes whilst I was about it!) and have started to work on my libraries... it's looking good.

Thanks... I actually had thought of doing that... but with thousands of photos it would be a pretty fiddly and time consuming job... so TD's suggestion of iPhoto Library Manager has just finished the job (and does much else besides!). It's great, and I downloaded PowerTunes from the same www.fatcatssoftware.com, and I like the look of it!
