Just got the new iPhone 5 and the camera shutter won't open, i see the 4 and 4s have suffered with this. Would have thought apple old have fixed it for this phone. Is there any known fixes or is it a trip to the apple store?

I received my iphone 5 yesterday restored from my old iphone back up on my computer. Everything works except the camera when you go to open the app it will either not open the shutter or it will open but leave a black image, all the buttons are not responsive ie flash on/off/auto but for some reason it will let switch from photo to video although this doesn't fuction either.

I have read a few sggestions on a few blogs about this i have tried restarting, rebooting, erasing everything and going again, i set up as new iphone and backed up from cloud and still no win. someone help please.

I expericed this issue a few times since I got my iPhone 5.  Normally I would kill all running apps and reboot to fix the problem.  I happened to be at the Apple Store trying to use the store app to purchase something.  I found the camera wouldn't focus and the employee suggested setting up an appointment with the Genuis bar since it could be hardware.  Right after that I had the issue with the shutter not opening.  Nothing I did could get it working again.  Took it into the Apple Store and they did some diagnostics and determined it to be hardware and replaced the phone.

Hey Guys, It was a replacement job for me!

No dramas though as always with apple but a pain in the arse that there are such limited apple locations that will replace on the spot.

I have the same problem too and I'm not in USA currently.  Any suggestions?? Please help. Also, if it is 7-8 months after buying the phone will the apple store still replace it for a new one?

Definitely! Apple can replace your device if you are having an issue with camera not opening as the device is still under warranty. However since it was purchased in USA, you might need to bring the device back in USA for it to be replaced (Depending on what country you are now). =)

Had the exact same problem with my iphone 5.  Took it to Genius bar and was told that it was due to a camera software bug, not a hardware problem.

The phone had to be reset, restored, and configured as a NEW PHONE.  The camera function came back and is now working.  The key thing they said is NOT to restore from a backup since it will just copy the bad software which will cause the problem to come back.  Once configured as a new phone, just sync your apps and backed up data.  The only item that you'll loose is your text messages.  Those will be forever gone.

Hope this helps since it took me 3 days to get this resolved.

Camera shutter PROBLEM SOLVED on my iPhone 4.   It looks the shutter freeze is due to moisture.   I dried the phone using the cold very dry air from an air conditioner outlet for one hour (refrigerator or freezer wll not work!!!! - will not dry the phone internals) .   The shutter began opening lickety split, better than ever before.

A guy on Youtube suggested drying out an iPhone 3 in the sun to solve Wifi operation problem and I decided to try on my iPhone 4.  The trick worked, camera shutter opens in about 1/2 second rather than 4 or 5 seconds or never.   Try removing the moisture from the phone, I suggest the A/C trick as more effective and safer than sun or hair drier.   Other possibility could be the 2 day jar of rice treatment.  RS in Kuala Lumpur
