Q: iPhone 5 can't send SMS - gets an error when sending SMS

People - I'm using a Sprint iPhone 5 with my local GSM chip. Everything works fine, except sending SMS.

All basic troubleshooting has been done: checked SMS settings, erased Network Settings, checked SMS Service # through *#5005*7672# and it is fine, restored the phone and re-checked everything above again... and nothing. :-(

Please help?

iPhone 5, iOS 6, Sprint model (A1429), GSM Network

I ll give you worse news, that is CDMA phone. Replacement obtained with much trouble will not work either. Just does not have to. Magic wand that can be waived and locked cdma phone changed into unlocked gsm- does not exist. Sorry, please don't hate me.

fromsouth, being Apple's callboy again? It is a CDMA phone indeed. But it has a GSM radio and it can be unlocked. Verizon phone uses the very same model (A1429) and works like a charm in several countries.

Well, you should know the answer. Isn't it in the Apple rookies' training manual?

Actually, I come to that site mostly to learn things, and sometimes to help. So I learned two things,

    1. Apple doesn't unlock iphones.

    2. Apple does not replace cdma phones, for gsm phones.

Obviously you don't need my help. Still it made sense to allow people, who still can to return phones.

So they know that and will not to join "sinking ship". Please try to not be offensive. If you will continue and I report your post, apple sometimes removes a whole thread. And some people could use your, or my information.

Go for it, since the information you have is wrong and is misleading people here. At least 2 people on this thread, drugna ( https://discussions.apple.com/people/drugna) and myself were able to replace Sprint phones for unlocked AT&T phones. I got tired to wait for an answer and I successfully replaced my 2 Sprint units for 2 brand new and unlocked AT&T phones. You could be more positive and have a nice attitude towards the people here - a little empathy for all people here would be nice instead of this "I'm the authority here" childish behavior would be appropriated in a forum like this.

You did not replace. You returned phone using Apple's 30 days return policy. And then you purchased Att locked GSM phone, that will not work outside of US. Stop misleading people into trusting, that they do not have to return, in order to get that problem resolved. I am not authority, you just didn't read rules. Anyone with certain amount of points, can report posts for removal, for valid reasons.

Another case of Apple Store people saying otherwise? If this ATT is locked, how am I using them right now?

That is another thing that I know, that US retail stores do not sell unlocked Iphone 5. May be that empathy that you asked from me, prompted those salesmen to point that Sprint phone to you, After you stayed in line, for about 5 hours and was desperately asking them for unlocked phone and they knew, they don't have one. How you using them now, you probably will not say, but knowing time zones, I can bet you are in US, on active ATT service.

fromsouth, I've been assigned to Brazil for some time. It is 11PM down here, and I'm using a local carrier sim card. Your information is not accurate. Again.

What we definitely know so far is that the AT&T model works with calls, wifi and text (I'm using one now here in the UK). The sprint model works with calls and wifi, can receive texts but cannot send them. As for LTE, I was told the AT&T model will not work, but the sprint model will. That still remains to be seen.

Oh. Another ATT "impossible to purchase unlocked" is working using a non-ATT SIM. So, Brazil and UK carriers are "magically" activating ATT locked phones. Any comments, fromsouth?

Roman, don't stress about the first Apple care round call, first they must admit the facts and the scale of the problem, which is difficult because it is not written in an official announcement ( like some guys here with a certain amount of points :) ), on my side I am still waiting the answer from Apple Singapore which has reported the pb after I sent few emails
