Greetings all,

I'm sure there are already tons of these threads out there, but I'm quite honestly too frazzled to search through everything.

Got my iPhone 4S (First Apple Product) about a month ago from Verizon, which replaced my Droid BIONIC. Have been very pleased with everthing up until tonight when I updated to iOS 6, and my contacts went *POOF*. I haven't even opened the iCloud function under settings until tonight when it asked me if I wanted to use it, so I figured "Why not?". Clicked OK, logged into my Apple ID Account, and after I logged in, everything is exactly the way it was prior to updating, except every single one of my contacts is gone. My texts are still there, but have phone numbers attached and not Names. When I open contacts under the Phone icon, it just displays my Phone Number and everything else is empty.

I think I MAY have logged into iTunes once? If that? So, seeing as I haven't logged into anything or opened iCloud to backup any of my data, did this iOS upgrade just hose all 300+ of my contacts? (Work and Personal...Boss isn't going to be happy)

Please, someone PLEASE give me some advice!

P.S. I've tried flicking "Contacts" on & off under iCloud and tried multiple reboots, and still no dice.

Thank you in advance.

I may have a fix for you. In my case, although several contacts were missing from the "Contacts" listing, they appeared when I did a search by typiing the first name. So the information was still on the phone, just hidden for some bizarre reason. The following steps appear to have unhidden the contacts.

    1. On your iPhone, go to Settings.
    2. Tap on iCloud.
    3. Turn "Contacts" OFF.
    4. When asked "What would you like to do with the previously synced iCloud contacts on your iPhone?", answer "Keep on My iPhone". You'll see the message "Turning Off Contacts".
    5. Turn "Contacts" ON.
    6. When asked "Your contacts will be merged with iCloud. Merge or Cancel?" answer "Merge". You'll see the message "Turning On Contacts".
    7. Hit the HOME button.
    8. Tap the PHONE icon, then select "Contacts". You should see your iCloud contacts appear, and you're good to go.

I have a slightly different experience. I updated to iOS 6 last night. It wasn't until this evening that I realized my phone numbers were all missing from my contacts. Also my contacts with multiple email addresses were now separated into multiple contact entries, each holding a separate email address.

I tried ProgMale's suggestion, but I get no prompt that's described in step 6.

I've since spent a few minutes going through my Google Voice entries and have updated some phone numbers that way. But what a PAIN!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying that your phone was not connected to anything to backup?  All the data on your phone was only on the phone and no place else?  If that's the case... ;-(.... you must backup to something in order to share the data someplace safe.

Same exact problem here.  My gf's 4S lost all contacts, email addresses, and addresses.  Still has old text messages.

If you remember creating an iTunes backup at some point prior to updating, you might still be able to get your contacts back. You may restore from a previous backup in iTunes (might not work due to difference in iOS versions), or use a 3rd party app that can extract the backup contents for you. Try iPhone Backup Extractor. You can easily import the contacts back to your phone later on. Hope this helps.
