Maybe the problem is in your monitoring system, are you using headphones?
If you let just one track play, let's assume it's the left one, do you see the right channel playing in the output strip?

The channels are not registering on the screen as playing. The output fader shows no activity but it can be heard. it does this with multiple headphones... also through the speakers on the laptop, and when I try to split the signal and run them through 2 DI boxes, same thing... It blows my mind. Think I'm just going to get an audio interface with several output selections. I know that'll fix the problem

So, you play the tracks, you can hear them (though you hear them on BOTH channels) but your channel strips show no activity?
I'm trying to figure out what could be the problem, because this seems quite weird!!
What OS X version are you using? I know of some compatibility issues running on Lion and Mountain Lion.
