    Perform a #8 Reinstall Just OS X and others as needed.

     

    Step by Step to fix your Mac

     

     

    Likely what happened is a hard drive sector failed with a essential system file portion on it, it needs to be replaced.

     

     

    I should remind you that 10.8 has a Recovery HD partition on the boot drive that you hold command r down to boot into to reinstall only OS X over the Internet.

     

    Don't use the 10.5 or 10.6 boot disks obviously.
