Several ideas ...
- Try disconnecting all peripherals then restart.
- Make sure and quit all open applications before restarting.
- Repair Disk Permissions. Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
- Select the startup disk on the left the select the First Aid tab.
- Click: Repair Disk Permissions. You should see: Repair Permissions Complete when it's done.

One thing not mentioned: Safe Boot and start to find out what 3rd party apps and drivers you are carrying around.
What did you add since last week? I'm sure a few things. Hopefully not junkware like Norton or some "tuneup my Mac" which are just garbage.
Also, nice to have bootable backups. Clones. System Restore Image(s).
And you can always use Recovery Mode to 'refresh' the OS.
You do know about the Recovery Mode partition. command-r on startup or hold down Option key to bring up the Mac's boot device selector.
Skype gets mentioned regularly. There can (are) changes in even "security updates" that can tend to break theirs and others.
One reason to make a backup before any upgrade.
You don't have Windows restore points but you do have tools to make an restore image. You used Acronis or Paragon etc or built into Windows.
And like Windows but not (no F8 anyway) use Shift Key - disables 3rd party apps and drivers from loading, builds a new system boot cache too which is important.
Updates: ideal to restart first. Also that is the time to make an image. Might use Recovery to do a disk verify and repair. (Windows 8 I will say will TELL ME when there is a disk I/O error that needs to be addressed).
System Profile : About This Mac - there are tab there to show apps and hardware as well as to show your system logs. For some things you need to use the command line in Terminal application. Seeing what services are running. I get the feeling Windows provides a different way that maybe you have used?
