Q: How do I stop this from happening?

I have one of the old ipod shuffles. It's only 1GB and I believe it's a 2nd generation one. When I try to skip 2 or more songs in my playlist, the unit shuts down. The battery is still fully charged.  Is there a way to stop the Ipod shuffle from doing this? it's really annoying when it happens in the middle of a workout.
